Picked up a garand

Finally got the money for a garand, and found a nice korean era Service grade, usgi issue. Springfield Armory. Made in december of 1953. The wood is a little dirty, but some beautiful wood shines through under neath in areas, so i really need to clean the stock up.

It was at a local gunshop for around 650. And its beautiful. I havent gotten ammo for it yet, but im gonna place an order for a case of ammo through the CMP.

Good find do you know if it's all original? One way to tell is to take the wood off and look at the legs on the receiver for writing, mine has LEAD67 on it, this means it was rebuilt at Letterkenny Army Depot in 1967. Congrats on your new rifle they clean up nice and pretty

When you "clean up" the stock, make syre you do not sand away and cartouches. The only finish you should put on it is either Boiled Linseed Oil or Tung Oil. I beleive the Tung Oil is more correct for a Korean War era M1.

BTW, they are like Lays Potato Chips... you can't just have one!

Garands are great fun. Wood's wood, so use any wood cleaner. Murphy's Oil Soap, I think it's called, comes to mind. Then put a coat of BLO on it. That'd be Boiled Linseed Oil. Any hardware or paint store.
