Picked up an old school S&W 10-8

Me too!

I decided a guy can make a mad impulse buy every once in a while - and it's been a long while for me. So I went out today and bought that nickel 10-8. They were asking $350 + tax, so I offered them $320 + tax and they took it. With the tax it was...$350 - so I saved about $35 by making an offer. They were quick to take it, so naturally I thought "Why didn't I offer less?". But I'm happy with my near mint nickel specimen at that price.

I've never bought a gun from a store before - always been face to face from a private party. So I was somewhat chagrined by all the forms you gotta fill out. It seems sorta like de facto registration. Oh well.

Also, I won't be able to take possession until March 3rd because they have to hold it for 30 days before they can re-sell it. It's gonna be a long wait!

Reloading adds to my enjoyment of the shooting hobby. With two 38 specials and five different 357 magnums it lets me shoot a lot more than I could with store bought ammo. Those 148 gr. wadcutters with a little Bullseye are inexpensive, accurate and just plain fun to shoot. And the brass from those target loads lasts a LONG time.

Don't you know it. And I'd love to find a total beater Model 10 (or similar) that could at least shoot wax bullets, if nothing else safely, for $100 or less. I've been wanting a dedicated wax bullet only gun so that I can setup in my garage (with eye and ear protection of course) and practice drawing and firing from the hip at close range targets.

Is a Model 10-5 +P rated?

Yes.

For a mint nickel gun, I'd say you did very well. I've had that same feeling though. I recently found a pinned & recessed S&W Model 66-1 2.5" for $450. I offered the dealer $430 cash and he accepted with no hesitation. Same thing happend last spring with a near mint 4" Model 15-3 priced at $329. I offered $309 and my offer was accepted almost before I got the words out of my mouth  .

Speaking of doing well...$309 for a near mint M 15-3? Wow! I paid $450 for mine. I kinda got took on that one at that price - but sometimes ya just have it!

You know, the way I look at it, if you really like the gun and you are okay with the price, then it wasn't a bad deal at all. Maybe not a great buy, but fair for you nonetheless.

And lately, $450 seems to be the going rate for Model 15s.

Here is that 15-3, made in '69. Shoots like a dream, as good as it looks:

I started with Colt .357 revolvers, then moved into tactical tupperware. Why would anyone want 6 shots of .38 special when .357 was the same size???

Then one day as an impulse I picked up a mint 10-8 4" heavy barrel, looked like it hadn't been fired hardly at all, was a trade-in from a large batch from an armored car company. It was only $220. Grips were chewed up so I put a Pachmayr on it.

Geeeez, I hear people talk about S&W revolver triggers, now I know what they mean!

That 10-8 is now about my favorite range gun. I load a medium-weight Cowboy load with 158-gr lead SWC's and you can shoot it all day- it doesn't beat up the hand or the gun and your brass is right there, no crawling around looking. Accurate as the day is long.

Liked it so much now I am always on the lookout for inexpensive S&W revolvers, pre-lock of course, for my collection. Managed to find a few. The "K" frame is just a sweet shooter, about the perfect size for a .38 special, good for carry, bedside, self defense, plinking, and there are a metric buttload of them out there (still made today!) so parts are easy to find, and you're not wearing out a rare specimen.

Oh, and I still have a few Colts.

That is about as fine a collection of revolvers as I've ever seen, Madcratebuilder. Beautiful. By chance, have you applied Renaissance wax or some similar treatment? The finish is exquisite.
I use Eezox these days. Wipe on, let it dry for 24hrs then wipe off. You may notice some rust tint on your patch after the first two or three treatments, but after that the patch is spotless after treatment. I'm maintaining a fairly large collection (100+) and I'm really sold on Eezox as a rust preventive, solvent and lube. No oily film, no finger prints. I still oil and or grease before shooting.

Dad's old 10-6 with new Hogues

Eezox is great stuff. I've been carrying a can in my range bag for two years. At meets it is amazing how many times a good spray of it on a finicky semi-auto will fix things right up. Smells good s well.

I popped the side plate and did a detail cleaning last night, it appears to have never been opened before.
I cleaned it up nice and now know all the internals are solid and clean, I am really liking this revolver!
Thanks to this forums sticky, taking it apart was a snap. Thanks for all the info you guys put together here!

Master Leather rig.

I also have true old school leather for it, an old Bianchi. Got the rig out of a used holster bin when I bought the gun for my stepdad, so he would have something to keep it in. It sat under the bed for years, collecting dust and disuse. Cleaned up rather nice, wouldn't you say?
