Picked up another K frame

Stopped by the shop last week on a whim, found this that someone had traded the day before. 1977 13-1, pinned and recessed. Other than the grips, she's a beauty. Grips will be replaced soon. This is my first pinned and recessed Smith--a nice addition to my small collection.

I had the same question a few months back!

Pinned and recessed=barrel is pinned to the frame, back of cylinder is recessed so cartridges sit flush with the cylinder.

Someone with more knowledge than me can tell you when Smith stopped doing this.

Did the same this weekend with a 3" Model 65-3 which is right at the very beginning of the non-P&R production. I really like these K-frames. It joins a 66-1 2 1/2" and a 13-5 3".

S&W pinned the barrel initially because they thought it might unscrew from the force of a .357 magnum.
The recessed cylinders were to give more support to the base of the case.
It was found that neither was necessary and so they disappeared in a cloud of cost cutting.

They might not be needed, but they seem to be taken as signs of an era when more time was taken for workmanship - just like the flat serrated trigger on that 13-1. I just like the look of the recessed cylinders.

K Frame

A man can never have too many. Nice looking revolver!

K-frames are addictive. I picked up a 65-3 4" ($280) in February and just last week a 19-4 4" ($199). Amazing how folks will unload these artworks to the local gunstore for pennies. I just can't understand how beat-up 2nd gen Glock 9mm can demand more money than a 95-98% K-frame. The used market is a funny thing. Now I just need to find someone who doesn't know anything about their 5-screw M29
