just bought a rem 700 varmit in .308, came with leupold base and rings. I am thinking of putting a leupold VX II 3X9-40 on it. I will only be shooting 100 yds and a used one can be had for $200. anyone think it should work? or have a better idea with out spending big money.

Ditto. Good choice. I'm a big fan of used Leupolds, and several of my rifles wear them. They are excellent scopes, and even better deals for the money if you can find a good used one. The lifetime warranty goes with the scope.
