Pistol Tasers? Any good makes out there?

C2s may be sold other places than a gun shop and many FFL holders may not sell them since they're not firearms.
Your best course of action is to either identify a dealer near your point of entry into the US and make your purchase or have your stateside host do it for you.

Do you have a "host" when you arrive that can receive the C2 for you before you arrive?
uridium Taser is the only brand of actual tasers (projectile based electronic dissableing devices) on the market the rest are stun guns and are not as effective in any form of the word
taser makes a great product in many forms
as many have stated the C2 is a great choice it comes in alot of colors is small enough to fit almost anywhere youd need it too and gets the job done
if your feeling a bit generous with your wallet you can always get an X26 like the police use and have many many options for holsters and accessories if the need arises
all of tasers products are rated with the same voltage/amps/ohms etc and are set at a pulse that equals the brains natural waveform and there for debilitate on disruption not simply pain so more (estimated at something like 80%+) of people are properly effected by the device and are disabled untill help can arive
as long as it is a branded taser product and you do your practice with it youll be good to go
oh and again make sure to check all the local laws some states do treat them with more regulation than a firearm or melee weapon

Anyone know what the shelf life of the battery pack is? Is that something to worry about? I've really been eyeing one of these things for my wife who is a student so CCW is out of the question.
C2 is actually better for civilian use as it conceals better than the x26 and doesn't look like a gun or anything threatening.
Can't get around the background check as you have to call in or go onlline to give your information. When you pass they send back a code to activate your taser. Won't work till then.

A local shop just sells them without requiring any paperwork/checks so my confusion was over that I thought you were saying that the dealer was having them do it instead of Taser having the consumer contact them to activate the device.

There is actually a website you must go to in order to activate your Taser. It runs a simple NCIC Felony check. It costs $9.95 and the whole process takes about two minutes. When you pass the test, there will be a combination that you enter into the Taser via the "trigger".
True. I address this briefly in the review as well. It does conceal well. It is much better for civilian use, as it is designed for a self defense situation. The X26 has a "5 second ride", discharging 50,000 volts for the entire 5 seconds. The C2 on the other hand has a "30 second ride", where the initial 5 seconds has the full 50,000 volts, then drops to a lower voltage for the remaining 25 seconds. The purpose of this is so the victim can immobilize the aggressor while they have an opportunity to escape.
Also, as the Taser is a fairly expensive device, and some may hesitate to run and drop it after deploying it, Taser will actually replace it free of charge if you can present them with a police report stating that you left it behind after deploying it.
