I know where the ranges are and I can get to those with a car but alot of times I want to go out in the wilderness and take my dog and just hang out all by myself without worrying about other shooters and all the things that can come with an organized range.

I know places in the mountains to go, but they aren't exactly car friendly and I rarely have access to a truck anymore. There's a gravel pit above willard bay that I can get to with a car, but alot of times there are people four wheeling around there. I'm wondering if anyone knows some good places out in the desert off I-80 or some place totally remote but car accessible?

    place to shoot

Go west on I-80 to exit 84. Go south toward Grantsville about 1.6 miles, turn right, take the road to the cement plants. After the second plant, anywhere to your left is wide open with a 2000 ft high backstop about one mile thick. The road goes back to within 100 yards of I-80--you can get clear LOS up to about 700 yards, or at roads end about 75 yards. From Sandy it is 50.6 miles, you may be closer. 2 miles to the right of the road is a favorite flying site for the R/C airplane crowd, but they won't see you, or hear you shooting, and they cannot fly as far as the road, and you won't see or hear them.:)

Similar location to hjrocket gave, only go north of the freeway until you arrive on Stansbury island. The South end of the island is public land with lots of popular places to shoot. I go there often, If my favorite location is being used I find another. Gravel road, used by lots of cars and the occasional dump truck.

Unfortunately the Salt Lake valley and most places near it are so overrun with people that you'll have to escape the valley to find a good place to shoot.

While it might not be too close, you can shoot a LOT of places by Magna, into the Oquirrh Mountains near where Kennecott is. You can also go through Lehi near 5-mile pass, and again, there are gruntloads of places to shoot. In the Tooele valley there are some good places to shoot, but it's about an hour drive (or more) from Ogden, so if you want to know some decent places out here, you can PM me.

Then, of course, there is the West Desert, but again, that's a looong drive.
