Short of knowing somebody who owns land that's adequate for shooting, does anybody know of any ranges or areas near Huntsville where one can plink?

And yes, I plan on picking up after myself. :)

If it's Huntsville, AL, there's the range at the Swan Creek Wildlife Management Area in Tanner. I was just there for the first time a week ago. It's a nice range (could use some trash pickup). You'll need your own target holder and any sandbags or such. Benches and tables are already there.

From Huntsville you'd take I-565 east to Highway 31, then north to Thomas Harmons Road. There's a Caterpillar dealership on the SE corner of the intersection. Head east, then the road turns north. There's a sign on the west side of the road.

If it's in Texas, I don't know. ;)

I'll second Swan Creek if it's Bama. Depending on where you in Huntsville there's another WMA shooting range at Skyline out towards Scottsboro and north. I believe Skyline actually has a longer range. There's an indoor range at Larry's, but pistol caliber only. The WMA's are your best bargin. $10 Heritage hunting license and you're good for the year, but paper targets only and you will need your own holder (I do my public service and clean up yard signs out of the ROW after elections).

Hrm, may have to keep a hold on this thread. I hit Huntsville twice a year so this oughta be good information.

Is the $10 Heritage license for AL residents only? I just moved here and have not gotten an AL driver's license.

This is also a private club, Blue & Gray Rifle and Pistol Club. They have a range in the Guntersville Dam area. You have to be a member.

What about Larry's indoor range in Huntsville?

Larry's is OK. Pistol caliber only though. I've only used it for free (got a couple of coupons when purchased a gun, and again at their S&W event) so not sure what the price is. Decent range, but LOUD. I'd use plugs and muffs there. Also when I went with the wife to try out the new pistol, we kept getting hit by brass from an adjacent shooter. Got to be real annoying. Really not bad, but I prefer the WMA and being outside.

I can't help on plinking, I am shooting only IDPA this season and find matches at the Arab club mentioned above, also in Hartselle, Manchester TN, Birmingham, and Sheffield.

If you want locations and schedules, let me know.

Nope, just go to the closest Walmart and tell them you want a Wildlife Management Area permit, sort of like a access permit usually needed in addition to a hunting permit. Should run $16 for out of state. Swan Lake is a pretty nice public range not too far away for Huntsville, and $16/year beats $10 per visit at Larry's.
