I will be going for a visit in the Killeen, TX area (Harker Heights, actually) and hopefully will have time to do some shooting .

Any 'public' ranges or places nearby with at least 100-yd (for rifle) shooting?

Thanks -

Alex

If you find a good place let me know! I live in Temple, about 25 miles from Killeen. Every time I go into Killeen I do see some billboard on 190 advertising an indoor shooting range in Harker Heights (sorry, not rifle) but damned if I can ever find that place! There's no phone number and it just says something like "Indian Trail at Veteran's Memorial." I've driven around looking for it twice with no luck.

The only place can think of is toward Austin. Red's - North (an Indoor place in Pflugerville) and Eagle Peak (?) - outdoor range in Leander are the nearest to Killeen. Don't know if Weber's will ever open up (outdoor pistol and skeet? no rifle). Say, is Thunder Ranch still open?

I've been looking for a range too. There are some around but I don't know anything about them because I haven't had time off from work to check them out yet. Red's Indoor Range was mentioned, go south on I-35 and take the exit for 1825 then go east for a few miles, it's on the left. You said you want >100 yd rifle range so indoor might not be good enough.
If you go south on 195 between Killeen and Florence is a range but I don't know anything about it. From Florence go west to 183, on 183 is Tony's gun range, I don't know if he has long distance or not. I heard there's a place in Copperas Cove but haven't been able to find it.
There's also a place north of Killeen that has several outdoor ranges including long-range rifle. It's about 60 miles up 317, but if Tony's or the range on 195 don't have what you need it might be your best choice. There's a website, I think it's carlchandler.com

If anybody else knows about the range in Copperas Cove please post the info here.
Thanks

You are in luck! Tony's Gun range is open from 0800 to 1600 hrs 7 days a week. You go south down Hwy 195 until you get to CR 138 just right before Florence. Go west on CR 138 until you come to US Hwy 183 and take a left going south. Tony's range is going to be on the left hand side approx. 3 miles down. He has six lanes outside for pistol that is 25yrds and a 150yrd 6 lane for rifles. They charge $10 for all day shooting. Man size targets are $1 ea. and rifle targets are $0.25 a sheet. If you get lost their phone #254-793-3906. Stan is the range manager and he is usually out there. Bring your own ammo and firearms though.

The range between Killeen and Florence is called Minute Man. I past by that place all the time and it always has a sign up that it is closed. Don't rightly know why though.

The reason that you can't find it is because the guy has not built it yet. I think he got a little over zealous and started to advertise and a few things came up with the construction. Last that I heard it was supposed to be built by Nov 03. Apparently other things came up.

Thanks

Might I suggest you guys take a gander over at the boards at gunsnet.net?
It's not something they do all the time (twice a year) but the shoots they hold in Calvert, TX are great! I went to the last one and had a blast. Ya might mosey on over there and keep an eye peeled for the date for the next one, I think April/May will be when the next one happens.

Temple Gun Club: you need to be a member to shoot (private outdoor range).

LT Dillon range - I think that was leased by Tiger (tactical institute for gun education and research) Valley. You can take courses there, carbine, handgun, etc.

I lived as a civilian in Killeen back in the 80's. At that time civilians could use the rifle/handgun range in Fort Hood for free. They even gave me free targets. Since the 9-11 thing they probably don't allow it anymore but, it might be worth a try.

Ft. Hood still lets you shoot on the range but you have to register every firearm that you bring on post with the Provost Marshal's office. That is after you get past the new civilian gate guards that carry Glocks. I have talked to several people that have gone recently and they say that it is very hard to get on due to all the deployments going on right now. Most of the soldiers are taking up all the lanes to qualify prior to going to Iraq or Afganistan.

Thanks

Thanks guys -
Actually, the reason I will be going is that a family member will be stationed at Fr. Hood shortly. I guess it will be worth a try there as well.

Sorry for the tread revive. But I'm new to the Ft Hood area and don't know where to shoot. I do not want to go on post to shoot because I'm not a fan of registering everything that I just want to shoot paper with...If I wasn't issued it, "the man" can mind its own business :)

So anyone know where to shoot close by? THere doesn't seem to be any BLM land in Texas... wheres the cheapest? How's the ranges' general environment (people-guests/range personnel, facilities, etc)?

Thanks for any info.

Yup, I used to be a member there. The range is really nice and offers shooting up to 400 yds.

After checking their website, I just found out that their owner Carl Chandler, passed away. Does anyone have any idea what happened?

Yes, there is a range in Copras Cove. There is a three-gun IDPA style match there at least once a month. Also a new range has opened just off of 183, it is called Astro's. You can try the club locator function at www.uspsa.com to find some others in the area. Enjoy.

Copperas cove host an action pistol, IDPA and 3 gun match each month. We have a yahoo group as well.

I dont shoot at the public ranges but shoot private and with the Copperas Cove Pistol Club (CCPC).

You could try your nearest Luby's Cafeteria. No, I jest.

A quick visit to mapquest showed Stan's Outdoor Shooting Range, don't know if this is public, and of course the Minute Man Rifle Range, as was already mentioned here.

Astrovillage is just north of CR138. If you are coming from Belton like I do drive to Salado to 2843 west it will take you to CR 487. Then take a right to Florence. Once in Florence, (WATCH YOUR SPEED AND LIMITS VERY CLOSELY) you will come to a light at Hwy 195 and take a right. Drive to just outside the north city limits and you will come to CR138 and take a left going to Hwy 183. Drive for a several miles until you come to 183. If you take a left you will go to Stan's(formerly Tony's) range about 3miles down on the left of 183. Look for the big upright tank that is painted like a yellow 20ga shotgun shell. If you take a right, Astrovillage is about 200yds on the left hand side. They have a sign at the intersection of CR 138 & Hwy 183 can't miss it. They both have rifle and pistol ranges and both cost $12 to shoot all day last time I checked. Visit them both and see which one fits you. Enjoy shooting in the heat.:neener:

I ended up at Weber's in Troy. I kinda did an impulse buy of a year-membership. Toured the place, thought it was ok. Looking back, I think I shoulda "shopped around" and looked at a few other ranges. But this one's real close...

I havent even shot there yet...I'm waiting for my membership card to come in, and at the time I didnt have any guns with me. Well.

I'm missing my BLM land...Texas, where every parcel of land is owned and I can';t simply shoot for free anywhere I please..! Even CA has BLM land to shoot on!
