I can't decide which. I want a good winter carry gun (summer carry is a Ruger SP101). I used to own a P-01 and loved it. I only sold it becuase I have a CZ 75B and really wanted a 1911. The XD looks like a good gun too.

The only thing that I don't like about the CZ is the price of magazines......I guess thats not really a good reason to not like a gun thought.......

What do you guys think?

It just depends on you. I'd go out and shoot both. I like the XD because its probably lighter than the CZ, but the CZ is proabably more accurate. So I guess it just depends upon you.

Mags are down to $20 or less each for the PO1. Mecgar is making them now, what's not to love? :)
Go back to the one you liked so much, the PO1.

take the xd. i have 2 and love em, i have ran them ran them hard and had 0 issues. i think an xd will outlast a cz over the long hall that is my opinion.

plus factory good quality mags for the xd are inexpensive and easy to come by. www.pistolgear.com

I do carry the 1911 during winter now. But, I need a good excuse to buy a new gun. :D I love my 1911. :)

Funny, I too have the same dilemma. From what I have read, the CZ is more accurate, and the XD more forgiving of neglect. If you already have a CZ 75B, why not get the XD. I happen to like the slick design of the CZ 75B more than the new CZ P01. The XD to my taste does not win a beauty contest, whereas the CZ is just flat out pretty. If both guns were a date, I'd take the XD to a rock concert and the CZ to the opera. If I had to pick one for my night stand it would be the XD. If had to pick one for a competition, it would be the CZ.

My advice is to really look at what you want and why. Look at your budget and the reasons for your choice of a new gun to put in your collection. If you can, try before you buy.

But I have to admit to liking the XDs for just running without too much consideration of maintaining them. I mean, for instance, if you like working on cars and have a beat up Chevy on blocks that you tinker with and run around town in every once and awhile...well that can be cool, especially with a new eight cylinder engine. On the other hand, if your really had to drive an automobile 1,000 miles and not need to worry about calling Triple A...well, then there's a reason for that too.

XD outlast the P-01? You're kidding me, right?

The P-01 has a NATO stock number and has been through an insane certification process.

The word on the street is that the XD has had finish problems, which has resulted in slide corrosion.

Here's a little ditty on the P-01 tests:

4000 dry firings
3000 De-cockings
Operator level disassembly 1350 times with out wear or damage to components.
Complete disassembly 150 times, this is all the way down, pins, springs etc.
100% interchangability, any number of pistols randomly selected, disassembled, parts mixed and reassembled with no failures of any kind including loss of accuracy.

Safety requirements:

Drop test
1.5 meter (4.9”) drop test, this is done 54 times with the pistol loaded (blank) and the hammer cocked. Dropping the pistol on the butt, the muzzle, back of the slide, sides of the gun, top of the slide, in essence, any angle that you could drop the gun from. This is done on concrete and 0 failures are allowed! A failure is the gun firing.

3meter drop (9.8”) 5 times with the pistol loaded (blank) and the hammer cocked, This is done on concrete and 0 failures are allowed! A failure is the gun firing.

After these tests are complete the gun must fire without service.

The factory contracted an independent lab to do additional testing on guns that previously passed the drop tests. These pistol were dropped an additional 352 times without failure.

The pistol must also complete an environmental conditions test:
This means cold, heat, dust/sand and mud.
The pistol must fire after being frozen for 24 hours at –35C (-36F).
The pistol must fire after being heated for 24 hours at 70C (126F)
The pistol must fire after being submerged in mud, sand and combinations including being stripped of oil then completing the sand and mud tests again.

Service life:
The service life requirement from the Czech police was 15,000 rounds of +P ammo!
The pistol will exceed 30,000 rounds with ball 9mm.

Reliability:
The reliability requirements for the P-01 pistol are 99.8%, that’s a .2% failure rate.
This equals 20 stoppages in 10,000 rounds or 500 “Mean Rounds Between Failure” (MRBF)
During testing, the average number of stoppages was only 7 per 15,000 rounds fired, this is a .05% failure rate, a MRBF rate of 2142 rounds! Over 4 times the minimum acceptable requirement.
The U.S. Army MRBF requirement is 495 rounds for 9mm pistols with 115 grain Ball ammunition.

Accuracy for a CCW really means little. At 7 feet most pistols are going to hit center mass. Accuracy is subordinate to reliability for a CCW. I would think that an XD would been a better choice since it has less things to snag on.

GaryArkansas,

Great post. Can you cite the source of your data? Also, do you know if similar tests were done for the CZ-75B. My preference is for the CZ 75 because it comes in stainless.

If you're demanding that you need or want a new pistol and it has to be 9mm why not take a hard look at the G-19. The Glock is a stronger platform then both of the pistols in question, with the slides and barrel's being just this side of indestructable. The PO1 will be much more accurate then the XD or the Glock and it can be had for under $500.00, with the only knock being that they don't seem to be in wide distribution and that could mean difficulty in aquiring parts. I'd go G-19 1st, PO1 2nd and I'd pass on the XD!

I've shot both and owned the XD9.

Frankly it boils down to whichever you like and shoot the best. Personally I didn't care for the XD and sold it within a few months. The finish started wearing off very quickly also.

I handled the CZ 75B at the gun shop. Esthetically, I like it more than the XD9, but ergonomically the XD9 fit my hand like a glove. The deal breaker for me was the magazine release lever. It's too far for me to reach it with my thumb without significantly twisting my wrist. The XD has all the levers on the right place for my hand size. To give you a point of reference, I can wear a medium size gardening glove tightly, and the large size fits just a little lose. My hand from the base of the wrist to the tip of my middle finger is 7.5 inches.

I am picking-up my two tone (stainless and black) XD9 today after work. Thank you for all the advice.

Your choice is rational.

I own 4 CZs, and HAd a P01 - got rid of it largely because I could not work on it with the decocker, and prefer a manual safety. CZs are very good guns and pleasing to hold, shoot, and just look at.

I just got the XD45C - VERY nice, and you are right - the controls are all very well thought out. The grip on the XD9 is even slimmer, allowing easy access to the slide lever and mag release. My 45C feels better in the hand than a 1911, and shoots very well. The NEW FINISH on the XDs is very durable, and to me, looks better in a way than the thick polycoat on the CZ. I also like the cocking and loaded indicators on the XD.

The CZ trigger can be tuned probably better than the XD. But, OTB, they can be worse. My XD trigger is getting better with use, and for a striker gun, is pretty crisp. We will see over time how the accuracy differs.

I took the XD 9 to the range today. She is a pleasure to shoot. I unloaded a whole magazine at 15 feet in a 1 inch group, except for the first SA shot which was a little off. Follow up shots are easy because the gun lands in almost the same place of aim after recoil. For combat scenarios, double taps would be a breeze.

One hand shots were also very acceptable in a 3 inch group.

I highly recommend this gun.

I have both an XD and P01, and if were in a pinch to sell

one it would be the XD. I find myself shooting the CZ a whole lot more, as most of my shooting is at local ranges at paper targets. The CZ is more accurate and fun to shoot. The XD is a great gun, better carry gun than the CZ, but for a shooter and one that will outlast most of my collection, i'll go to the CZ all day long.

SA = Single action?

As for the OP:
-I like the CZ's single action trigger reach, thier DA is too long for me. I would go CZ75 Compact. Like a CZP01, but safety instead of decocker.

-You are already familiar with the CZ75 and the 75 mags work in a P01 right? Go CZ.

OTOH:
-If you decide that your 75 and 1911 are good enough for winter carry, invest the money in a good carry belt and holsters for each.

If I had to pick between a CZ P-01 and an XD, I'd go with the CZ for sure. While the XD has better ergonomics than a Glock, in my opinion the CZ has them both beat in that department, and my experience with CZs (P-01 & PCR) has shown them to be 100% reliable and very accurate.

Another pistol I'd look at is the M&P; from my perspective, it also has excellent ergonomics, far better than the Glock or XD.

The Glock is a stronger platform then both of the pistols in question, with the slides and barrel's being just this side of indestructable.
How about something to back up that assertion? I'm not saying Glocks aren't tough, but I've never seen anything to suggest the CZ (or the XD) can't match the Glock in this regard. Otherwise, that statement is just an opinion.
