I was not sure where to post this....

I just disassembled my rem. 870 express magnum and after reassembling it, I was chamber feeding spent shells to dry fire. every now and then the gun wouldn't 'fire' even though I had moved the pump all the way back then forward. Can anyone help me? I tried disassembling again then reassembling with no luck..

Although it could be a Smithy type question, you might get more action in the Shotgun forum, which is where I moved it.

Get it to a gunsmith before you try live ammo. Nuff said.

Wow, I can't even understand any of answers and I know a little about these weapons.

Have the weapon in front of you and call me at 231-690-0954 and we will get to the bottom of this.

Well, I just got back from a gun shop and the guy there said it most likely has to do with me using spent shells, being as they expand after firing. Oh, and last night I reasembled it, the gun was still acting the same (sometimes it will, sometimes it wont dry fire) so I think it will be ok.... @AI&P Tactical, I probibably will still call you, just to be safe.

The gun shop guy is probably right.

    Shell heads expand when fired.

So when you try to re-chamber them, if they are not orientated exactly the same as they were when fired, the bolt can't lock all the way shut to release the disconnecter so you can snap the trigger.

Thats why they have to be resized when you reload them.

I don't know of too many ways you can put an 870 together wrong enough it only works part of the time.

Trim the hulls back a bit so they are the length of an unfired shell.

If you can fit a dowel into the hull to give it some weight, you got a poor mans snap cap (just gotta be mindful of the primer). I bet that might help with some of your issues.

RC, I've never tried putting an 870 together, but I might surprise you there!

Try dry firing it without the spent shells and see if all is in order. I'm not a fan of spent shells, snap caps, or drills with anything in the chamber unless it is live fire.

The 870 is my favorite lego.

AIi&P, perhaps you have information you could share on this thread that is relevant to the original poster's question.

    Thanks,

If I'm understanding correctly it does indeed sound like the gun isn't locking up on the spent shells completely. Only way you are going to know for sure is to get some snap caps, dry fire it on an empty chamber, take it to the range with live ammo or call AI&P.
