FET is calculated on a percentage basis. ie. FET on a $100 rifle is $11. (pistols are 10%, rifles and ammo are 11%) FET only applies to complete firearms (or kits), not receivers/frames alone (or in the case of non gun bp items, kits that lack a lock).I know a couple guys who love them, but my question is Who is paying the $50.00/ gun Federal Excise Tax on these? They have certainly gone past the 50 gun/year law!!
I believe that they do offer stripped lowers for something like $79 (or so). Of course, you can get aluminum lowers for as much as $20 less, so, ...There's so little profit on just the stripped lower, and almost no demand for a polymer LPK, I seriously doubt we'll ever see them sold as anything but a complete. Nonetheless, for a .22, it's possibly worth the $140 savings.
One of the guys here in Vegas has his SOTand 07 liscense and has built 2 that are full auto. They get wrung out pretty hard at the local shoots and have run just fine.
