The manual that came with my Taurus says:
“Plus-P’, “PIus-P-Plus” or other ultra or high velocity ammunition generates pressures significantly in excess of the pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures may affect the useful life of the firearm or exceed the margin of safety built into many pistols and could therefore be DANGEROUS.

Whuh?

My Ruger P95 manual, on the other hand, says this:
The Ruger P-Series pistols are compatible with all factory ammunition loaded to U.S. Industry Standards, including high-velocity and hollow-point loads, loaded in brass, aluminum, or steel cartridge cases. No 9mm x 19 ammunition manufactured in accordance with NATO, U.S., SAAMI, or CIP standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols.

Are they being overly cautious? Or should I avoid high-pressure ammo?

Personally I would avoid it. It puts undue stress and accelterates normal wear-and-tear and you are much more likely to experience problems if you constantly use +P or +P+ ammo in a pistol with that type of warning. Personally I wouldn't do it.. but its your handgun, do whatever you like.

Matt,

I would avoid +p as well. Not really sure the PT111 would stand up to hard hammering of +p as a regular diet. Could be if the warranty was one year or three year, they may not care, but when you warrant the weapon for the life of the weapon, not the owner, they may be covering their rear ends. Very short weapon with short hard cycle. That said. I would consider running a couple of boxes through to verify digestion. If all is OK. I wouldn't hesitate to carry a +p if it gives you more confidence and practice with something less. But I am far, far from an expert.

I have made a decision tol start carrying Taurus 180 gr. Hex in my PT145. I will carry the +p Cor-Bon in my USPf. You may want to keep an eye out for a standard pressure DPX from Taurus or Cor-Bon in the 9mm. The gello testing, bare, with four layers and through barriers has been impressive. I bet there is a non +p 9mm DPX in our future that will penetrate and expand, without hyped up velocity.

Humble Texan

Shrug.

I guess that a standard-velocity hollowpoint is still gong to sting and leave a mark. :D
