Police chief says AW = Machineguns

You are quoted as saying:
"If the ban is lifted, people will be able to purchase fully automatic weapons, and they will be able to use those automatic weapons,' he said. 'It could jeopardize the lives of the public or police officers or others.'"

The AWban does not affect machine guns. They are covered under the National Firearms Act of 1934 and hence, require a background check, $200 tranfer tax and a sign off by a state or local official. In 1986, it became illegal for mere peon citizens to own a machine gun manufactured after 1986 (which drove up the price of a transferable M16 from $800 to $10,000.

Both of these laws should be repealed as they infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.

More to the point... see if this describes you:

"The semi-automatic weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons — anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun — can only increase that chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons." — Josh Sugarman, 1988, Violence Policy Center.

I suggest you re-educate yourself.

The sunset of the AW ban will allow me to buy normal-capacity magazines at normal prices. I am tired of paying $75 and higher for 13-round Glock 21 mags when the ten-rounders and the LEO-Only mags cost about $18.

When September comes around, I will rejoice in buying four G21 mags and four G23 mags, all of them will be inscribed with "LEO Only" on them.

Kinda cool, eh? I will keep them as momentos for my children so I can tell them about the bad-old-days. Then I'll take them to the range to shoot my machine guns.

Rick

Odd, as PA is one of the most gun friendly states. Normally we just have to deal with these kinds of statements from folks over in Philly.

This underscores something I've said for years about the antis, and it applies to cops too. When it comes to factual errors about AWs, there are only 2 explanations: the speaker is ignorant, or the speaker is a liar. Take your pick.

I would question the credentials of this police chief. If he is so ignorant that he can't distinguish between a semi auto, and fully automatic weapon he is a complete idiot and should be dismissed for gross incompetence.

"If the ban is lifted, people will be able to purchase fully automatic weapons, and they will be able to use those automatic weapons"

I want to move to his district, then when the ban ends I can buy a New G36 or M4...:D

What a moron, he obviously has never heard of the 86MG ban, or the fact that in most states you can allready own full auto, albet at a nearly prohibitive price...:barf:

Does anyone here remember the police officer candidate who sued because the force wouldn't hire him becasue he tested too smart? He lost his suit. The court agreed that the dept. can refuse to hire people who are too smart to be police officers.

Police departments don't want intelligent officers so they don't hire them. It's not fair to expect that they've increased their IQ on the way up to Chief, now is it?

Found a reference to the above mentioned news story. The Associated Press reported the following case from New London, Connecticut:

"A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.

"The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test."

The U.S. District Court ruled the New London police had a reasonable explanation for their policy of rejecting applicants who were too intelligent -- they might get easily bored and leave the job after receiving costly training. On August 23, 2000 the Second Circuit Court agreed.

Robert Jordan has been working as a prison guard since his rejection by New London police. Apparently prison authorities don't care of Jordan is too intelligent for the guard job; or maybe prison guards have to be smarter than police recruits.

(Based on the Associated Press story published by ABC News 09/08/00)

So the practice is fair because all smart people are screened out of becoming police officers, not just that one particular smart person.

Fair is not correct though. I wish departments would end this practice because I would like to see the average IQ of police officers and their chiefs increase to the point where we no longer have to read stories like the one that began this thread.

You left out one option. The speaker is a flaming sphincter muscle.

from the article

"Terrorists can go to gun shows and purchase assault weapons that were manufactured before 1994 in states that do not require background checks, he said."

now my question.

Are there any states one can purchase a firearm from a ffl and not go through a backround check?

I know private sells are exempt but what about from a FFl?

In some states you can show your concealed gun license instead of doing the brady check. They assume if you still have your license you are in good legal standing and you already passed a FBI background check.

Doesn't work for full-autos though. Don't know where these jackasses get the idea that you can buy a MG and walk away with it the same day. At the very least you will have fill out ATF forms and wait for them to return the approved and stamped documents before the seller can even let you take possession of it. Usually takes weeks to months for the process. Otherwise both the seller and buyer are risking 10 years in federal pound-you-in-the-ass prison.

instead of doing the brady check.
This guy Brady has to have decendents or at least relatives.

I would be utterly ashamed to have the name Brady. Especially if I was kit or kin to him. Especially since this whole mess was dreamed up by the missus. A Brady by marriage. Utterly ashamed.

Remember Scott Brady? A good guy. Big ol' grin. Ah, them was the good ol' days.

I expect that even Roy and Dale are ashamed. I think they have gone to their reward, but I may be wrong about Dale. I have been wrong before.

The Brady bunch has forever been impinged, imparted, imputed, infringed, imbibed, insulted and impuned. They should sue somebody.

I am not trying to invoke Godwin's Law, but I am unaware of anybody currently claiming the name Hitler. I fear that the name Brady will be following in kind.

:( It was such a good name.
