When I bought the East German, Makarovs were dirt cheap!!

When was this, back in the 90's? I don't remember East German Maks ever being cheap.

I remember the Bulgies were quite a deal a few years ago.

What kind of ammo are you carrying in your Mak?

Just the standard 100 gr Wolf hardball.
That's the ammo the gun was designed to digest.
Years ago, you could get steel core Soviet and Chinese surplus, but Vladimir Klintonov put a stop to the importation of that. :cuss: :banghead:

Running holowpoints through a Mak is like shooting the same through a 9mm kurz. The expansion is quirky and you lose penetration!! Besides, as far as I know, nobody here ever designed a reliable 9mm Mak hollowpoint!!! That may have changed over the years, however. I know Federal put out their "classic" HP round in 9mm Mak, but that was discontinued years ago!! I think Hornaday has started to market a round in 9mm Mak, but I haven't bothered to look for it.

In my P-64, I just use the cheapy S&B ammo. It's always shot really well out of my gun and in my opinion, it's slightly higher quality than Brown Bear or Silver Bear. I carry with just regular old ball ammo.

beautiful maks you got there.
I have both the round hammer and the triangle hammer, both from JG. I seem to find myself heading up the hill a couple of times a month for one reason or another and JG is always on the way.

I bought my 1963 vintage E. German in 1994 for $189. I was a regular, so the guy sold me 1100 rounds of 9mm Makarov ammunition for another $60.

Picked up 2 Bulgies. Each cost me $170. The first has lots of holster wear, so I have carried this one. The second is unissued and as perfect as a Bulgie can get. I paid the same price for each of my 2 P-64s.

Workmanship on the E German gun is much better than either the Bulgies or P-64s.

I got a '67 like new round hammer. Shoots great, can't beat the price. This is the first time I shot it from 7 yards. What recoil?

Nice shooting! Shoot 100 rounds in one sitting with the P-64 and see if you notice the recoil. I'm sure you'll have a nice red palm and a sore web long before you get to 100. I think a redesigned grip would make a lot of difference. If the backstrap was a little wider, it would spread out some of that force and not be so hard on the hand.

I fired the P-64 about 60 times that day, then about 50 with my Kahr K-9. Yeah the Kahr felt like a Cadillac after the P-64, but the accuracy of the P-64 left the Kahr in the dust. 100 rounnds with the Polski would probably tire your hand some, but sore I dunno.

I also compared my P64 with my Kahr K9, and yeah, the accuracy of the P64 really amazed me. I don't know why, but I can get much tighter groups faster with the old Polish gun.

I find the recoil is just kind of ...weirdly placed. Its not that it necessarily has a ton of total recoil, it is all just focused at a specific part of my hand. Oh well.

I've never heard anyone put it quite like that about the recoil, but I definitely see your point. For me and the size of my hand, all the recoil seems hit me in the web between my thumb and index finger. I doesn't have much of a rearward recoil, but I notice that it has a lot of snap which seems to get felt by me right in the web.

Good point though!
