You really ought to look into a Colt or Springfield. They both make quality 1911 models known for their reliability, durability, and reasonable price.

Personally, I'm a fan of Springfield's TRP and Loaded series 1911s. You can't go wrong with either.

I'm a little confused here... do you mean only colt and U.S.F.A. make the originals as opposed to 1911A1's? If so, i'd say go with the colt, but thats only because i've heard little to nothing about U.S.F.A.

Im not farmiliar with USFA. I , personally , prefer Springfield over Colt as far as 1911A1's go. I have decided against Colt recently, as I have found out they do not make a "true" copy of the 1911A1; thier guns have firing pin safeties, and other modifications that are not true to the 1911A1. At least, thats what I am undrstanding. You may want to look at the Springfield brand.

daysleeprx i think he means a 1911. instead of a 1911a1. the 1911 is the original version where as the 1911a1 is an updated (1924) version

OK guys. Springfield Armory does NOT make a 1911.

Colt Does or did but they are available on gunbroker for about $1000. U.S.F.A.'s 1911's are a bit more and are actually made at the old Colt plant, under the blue dome. That doesn't matter much. Quality forgings are important.

So if you know that Springfield, Kimber, S&W etc... doesn't make a 1911, throw your opinion out.

Alot of companies make 1911 styled guns, I'm confused what constitutes an according to hoyle 1911 because i see alot of guns out there with that basic design

1911 is the gun the US military used before 1924
1911 A1 is the gun the US military used after 1924

much like an M16, M16 A1, M16A2 and M16 A4 are all the same BASIC gun with minor changes

This poll is already jacked. People have voted here that don't even know the difference between a 1911, 1911a1, series 70, 80, etc etc etc.

I'm actually trying to find out. I'm still pretty new to guns and honestly dont know the subtile differences between the basic 1911 design. I just know i like alot of guns with that basic design

1911 is not the same as the later 1911a1; although we tend to use the term "1911" today casually to include both models, I believe the OP was specifically referring to the former when he mentioned Colt & USFA - that's the clue which may have gone over some members' heads:

They are basically the same thing, I'd be happy with either. The A1 is just imporoved design from what i see i think i'd rather have one of those

my questioned is is a smaller barreled gun with basically the same styling still considered a 1911? Nowadays the basic design of all kinds of guns are offered with slight variations to improve them where do they fit in?
