so its against the law to do so now? I thought since it was technically pubic land you where able to carry what you wanted
 
Yep... firearms are not allowed. I was in Yellowstone this past summer and noticed that too (it didnt make me turn around or anything haha).

You did not see the "Gun Free Zone" signs up to stop crime of all kinds? Haha.
 
Ive gone on many hiking/camping trips in national parks and at least one of us has always had a handgun, usually a 1911. Sorry but i will take my chances with teh rangers asking questions then not having it and needing it.
 
You know how frustrating it is to keep my Ruger at home when riding up Skyline Drive in SNP?

Curious though, could I just keep it in my saddlebag, unloaded?

The law (federal "free passage" - can't remember the USC citation) allows you to do that - as long as it is cased, and as long as the ammo is in a seperate container. While the powers that be would "prefer" that your cases & containers be locked, there is nothing that requires you to do so.

I'm still trying to figure out what makes National Parks so darned special that I can't CC there, while I can take one step out of Shenandoa (sp?) National Park into the George Washington National Forest and CC without hassles.

It's been two weeks since my last letters to my Congresscritters asking them to find out why the Sec. Interior has not acted to change the rules. Time to cut & paste another one.

Prevent Poaching...

If you can haul out a big carcass, you should have no problem hauling in the necessary firearm without detection. That is a pretty lame reason. Poaching is already illegal. But, what am I saying? Many many federal laws are absurd. The 115 year rotation rate in southern forests is a PRIME example.

Sorry, little off original topic. Maybe I've had my head in the sand, but I hadn't heard even a wisper about the UN controlling our national parks. Has anyone else heard this?

There is no federal law that prevents CCW in National Parks. It is an administrative prohibition put into effect by James Watt, Sec'y of the Interior under Ronald Reagan. This is why the Senators petitioned the Sec'y of the Interior Kempthorne: He has the authority to declare the rule null and void.

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
 
We always win the online polling and surveys. The trick is turning those results into tangible efforts to overturn the ban.

Of course, I contributed my input the poll (take a guess which way I voted). Now it's time to consider going forward. Here's what everyone can do:

Talk to your US Representative and get THEM onboard. Ask them to write a letter to the DOI Sec'y requesting that the rule (CFR36 2.4) be amended.

There are some developments on this front that I haven't yet been able to post on my website, but if you can secure a letter from your representative to DOI, please do so. It will help in the near future.

I think you have that backwards. The second amendment should prevent the states from interfering with individual rights.
 
Yeah, I guess states should be permitted to ban free speech, too. And, while they are at it, should not have to get a warrant to search your home.

Heck, states should not be forced to abide by any part of the Bill of Rights they do not agree with. :rolleyes:
