I certainly wouldn't carry daily, subjecting it to abuse, but I would shoot it on occasion. Enjoy it as something you bring out and shoot as a treat to yourself sometimes.

Hi franconialocal,

Considering the very real possibility of the next to unused condition enhancing the monetary value of the weapon in years hence I would say build a nice presentation box.

FWIW, my grandfather made a similar decision in the 40's concerning an army issue revolver his father brought home from the first world war. In the end, he took the weapon with him. To date that old revolver has been to France twice, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. It now has a place of honor on Dad's wall above the glass front box holding 3 generations of military commendations and awards. That old revolver is no longer safe to shoot, but it's service to our family and our country makes it beyond price to our family.

In the end the choice is yours, collectors piece or useful tool. In the future, your descendants will point to your service weapon and say that it is the tool that kept your own and their future safe. Your commemorative weapon will be what grandfather bought from someone at the turn of the century. It's your choice.

Lets see...you shoot an carry it for many years, an it shows it...then 40 yrs. from now you find out a mint condition one is going for over $5000.00, but since you been shooting the crap out of it, its worth only $500.00.....can you live with that? Remember those old $4000.00 muscle cars? The ones no one really drove are worth $100,000.00 an even more...who would of thought!!!!!!!! Its a 1970 Hemi Cuda, its meant to be driven....if we could only go back in time.....

Its a show piece for BBQs find a nice show box and a good piece of leather to show it off in from time to time.

Wow...what a close split. Thanks for all the input, and I do agree with several points on BOTH sides.

Yeah...I considered the whole "Just a 92 F/S with a cheesy paint job" argument, and that's certainly a valid one. Yes...I am aware that the mfg. will test fire a weapon, so I don't really "count" those shots. Danbrew....I hear you loud and clear with the "ain't that special" feeling.

On the other hand I absolutely do agree with the fact that, if left in great condition, this sidearm could really increase in value both monetarily and sentimentally.

Yes...I do have the box and papers. My understanding (I'm not positive) is that this sidearm was offered exclusively through the American Legion so I don't think it is just something you can pick up on a whim. I'm not so worried about the "getting it confiscated" argument because I'm a LEO.

I'm kind of "old school" when it comes to this stuff, appreciating an items aesthetic value as much as it's function. Cheesy paint job or not, I respect what it represents to those who sacrificed. My brother was in the Gulf War, and my family has a deep military/law enforcement history.

I like the "old muscle car" argument....very compelling.

I also respect the "display this one, go buy one to shoot" argument, because God knows I have the itch to go see what this thing can do. My Ssgt. is drooling over it daily, and I've had a friend say "Damn....I should have bought that when I had the chance" LOL...I love it.

As you can see by how close the poll is......I'm still the guy going :banghead::banghead::banghead:

If you have plenty of "shooters" already, I'd box it up and display it!

If this is only your second gun... Well you better put it to use before the old lady does!!!

If I don't shoot a gun, it's becuase I have so many I just don't get around to it.

Shoot it...

Build a fire for a man and he will stay warm for a night. Set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

I'll tell you what kind of man I am... I have my first gun but I don't have my first wife. She left with the money I was going to buy ammo with.

id shoot it and carry it on special occasions like holidays and birthdays. i think that on special occasions one should always carry your finest weapon (yes i know i am a little strange)

WE NEED PIXORS

but anyway, I would put it in a nice box personally and break it out for a BBQ gun every
now and then. I would not shoot it. You have other guns for that.

Display. I personally don't own any guns worth just displaying, but you do. You can always get another stock M9 to beat the crap out of on the range. This one is not meant for that, and I wouldn't cheapen it by treating it like just another carry pistol.

I'm surprised at the almost even mix in the poll at this point! I'd be inclined to display it only if it had not been fired. Since it has, I'd use it and show it off on my person, assuming it's legal.;)
