Pompano Beach, FL CCW shooting

Broward Sheriff?s Office homicide detectives are investigating the slaying of a 50-year-old man gunned down outside his Pompano Beach home Wednesday evening.

BSO deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Northwest 19th Avenue shortly after 6:30 p.m. and found Randolph Canion shot to death in front of his house.

Investigators said Canion's eldest son was involved in a shouting match with two other men. When the argument escalated, investigators said Canion came outside with a gun and opened fire but missed.

That's when the two men fired back, fatally wounding Canion, investigators believe.

"He always had his hand out giving, you know what I mean?" nephew Aaron Canion said. "My uncle was in the church. He changed his life over a long time ago, but other people didn't believe that. So they had to do it this way, because they didn't believe."

Investigators are unsure what the dispute was about.

The two men -- 24 and 28 years old -- are being questioned about the shooting, but no charges have been filed. Investigators said both had permits to carry a concealed weapon.

Sounds like a good shoot to me. The guy came out and shot at people who were just arguing with his son, they, both licensed to carry, defended themselves successfully.

And I just love how the nephew used "he was in church" as an excuse for why the guy came out and used deadly force unprovoked. Because those who commit crimes ALWAYS seem to be either "good boys" or "giving people", right?

Oh, yeah, and I also love the reporter's choice of the world SLAYING to describe a seemingly justified defensive use of legally carried firearms.

I agree the antis are going to make a fuss, but I think, if it turns out that story is as it was told, it'd be pretty clear to anyone in legal circles that the homeowner responded to what wasn't a threat by escalating the situation with unjustified use of deadly force, and the two CCW holders responded in self-defense, only hitting the attacker and not injuring any bystanders.

Depends on how good the lawyers are. Here's hoping.

I read about this last night. Then, they were saying it all started with two younger kids, arguing on the bus, on their way home from school.

Leljedal said the men have a "long-standing" feud. The most recent flare-up followed a fight on a school bus between children from the two families, he said.

This is a really crappy neighborhood. If we're actually being told the full story, I'd call it a good shoot.

getting in a shouting match while carrying doesn't seem to be particularly bright. heck, being in front of the house of someone with whom you have a "longstanding feud" is downright stupid.

i didn't read either of the two articles, but my money is that these two get raped in the civil case because they were baiting the guy.

i can't imagine using the words "good shoot" to describe anything about this situation.

The link to the article said that the two shooters had criminal records for both gun and drug charges but that they both had CCW permits. How is this possible?

Court and state records were unclear on the disposition of those charges.

Welcome to Florida, "Record-Keeping Capitol of the South!" I renewed my Commercial Driver's License back in May, paid $100 extra for a fingerprint check (for the HAZMAT endorsement) and still haven't gotten my HAZMAT back. It's been... what? Seven months now?

Seriously, though... They could have been misdemeaners (which may not preclude one from having a CCW), or juvenile records (which get sealed at age 18).

I will chime in and say pompano is VERY bad in some areas...this being one of them. I know the officers that responded, just cant give out details.

I don't know. Sounds to me like they very much believed. Like they believed that they were being shot at.

I have real mixed emotions on this one. Obviously, having only news articles to go by puts us all at a severe disadvantage. But as described, the two guys were defending themselves against what sounds like a legally indefensable attack.

But ... as has been mentinoned. What in the hec could they have been thinking getting into a shouting argument with somebody in front of their home? Somebody you've had long standing bad feelings with?

This area is a couple blocks east of Powerline Rd, and a couple blocks south of Martin Luther King Blvd. Right by the soccer field that was an empty lot about five years ago.

That retirement park you're talking about is four or five miles to the northeast.

They have already asked if I would shoot someone in front of my house. I said if my or my wifes well being or life I felt to be at stake, I would. I was then called an evil conservative who has been corrupted by the neocons. My aunt thinks I have been literally brainwashed by the military.

I love them both, but they are Liberal to the core anti-gun transplants from Germany. Of course, for a few weeks after wilma, while I was down there fixing roofs and removing debris, they had to tolerate me and a few guns.

But they asked to borrow my 22 "just in case" when I left and I had to go pick it up, becasue, now that life is back to normal, "guns are evil" again.
