I thought I might try this (the one on the left) for cleaning up after a semi-auto off-range. I was also thinking of the similar devices you see cleanup people at amusement parks using--these might be better because they are totall enclosed with a little door, so the brass wouldn't roll out. Anyone know what these are called or where to find them?

I'm in charge of housekeeping at a large downtown building. What your looking for is either a "Lobby Upright Dust Pan". Similar to an enclosed dust pan on a short pole, about 36 inches, that swivels and lays flat when laid down. Look in and Office Max catalog. The ones used in parks, I don't know where you could get one, unless you checked with the City.

I saw on the SASS Wire a brass picker-upper one of the pards had either invented or was promoting. Many cowboy shooters tend to be...uhhh...rotund and have difficulty bending over to pick up brass.

This thing looked like a pooper scooper with the bottom a bit open and multiple parallel wires forming an inverted V along the bottom, spaced less than the width of the brass you want to pick up. You walk up to an empty case, press the scooper DOWN over the brass, it aligns with the wires and pops through them but can't fall back out. The scooper then formed a hopper to hold the brass.

Looked like a dandy and exactly what you wanted. I just can't find a picture of it with some fast googling.

I'm interested! I briefly scanned the SASS Wire forums but didn't see anything (note, I'm not a member or anything, just went and found it because you mentioned it). So if you find time to get a link, I'd be grateful!

Though the upright dustpans others listed, as well as pooper scoopers, could probably do a good job, too.

You might consider going a different direction, this also keeps your brass off of your neighbor at the range!

Years ago when Glockomatic and I attended the Chapman Academy we discovered they used "Pecan Pickers" on the range. Imagine a small steamroller that one pushes where the wheel has nubs on it so that the brass gets stuck in the wheel and then discharges into a bin.

Got to be a pic of one. I'll see if I can find it.

I purchased a Kitty Litter Scooper with a handle long and bent enough that I don't have to bend much, at PetSmart. Then I got a small broom with a 3' handle at Home Depot. Works like a charm, even for digging them out of sand, the ubiquitous topsoil of Fla.

Rock45, do you know where I can get something like that? I haven't looked into catchers designed for the bench or static use at the range. I was thinking of just putting a big cardboard box on end and putting a few boxes of ammo on the end to keep it from blowing over.

El Tejon/tankertom--thanks! I think that's the best solution for off-range use.

I always used steel-cased before in auto-loaders, but now I am moving to brass and want to start reloading for those guns, and mostly shoot off-range, so that's why I'm asking all this.

I am sure you can pick up these materials locally, if you have a plumbing supply house and a fabric shop. I simply used pvc pipe and fabric netting, held in place by zip ties. Size was determined mostly by the range benches where I shoot. A couple of sand bags ( actually crown royal bags filled with throw-away unusable brass ) will hold it in place very nicely. I think I have about $10 in the thing.

If you have an auto-loader that chunks brass out the side this works great, and your "neighbor" at the range will love you for it. It won't do much good if you have one of those pistols that sit brass out over your head, as some of mine do.

Good luck with it!

Bryan
