Investigating a possible job opportunity in Portland, so I'd like to know what the scene is like there for gun nuts.

I know about the CCW laws. Too bad the reciprocity isn't better, but otherwise seems reasonable. I would like to know if there are any unusually good or unusually bad gun laws on the books in OR that I may not know about.

In the past, I have enjoyed casual pistol shooting and I've done some NRA High Power Rifle shooting. Anything anyone can tell me about public ranges, club ranges, and High Power in the Portland area would be appreciated.

I like to hunt deer, and where I live now I have a family farm to hunt and shoot on. What is the hunting like in that area? Is it easy to find places to hunt?

How feasible would it be to try to get 10 or 20 acres or so within commuting range of Portland where it would be possible to hunt deer and plink on one's own property? Is this feasible for folk of modest means, or would one have to be a bajillionaire?

When looking for good shooting oppertunities in the Portland area, stop in at the Local US Army Recruiting office in Oregon City, see my friends SSG Fief and SFC Velasco. Tell them that I sent you, and that I said to take the rest of the day off and take you shooting. Oh yeah, and ask about the alien video.

The address of the recruiting station is:
19069 S Beavercreek rd.
Oregon City, OR

Have fun,
SSG Dugdale

All right, soot, you've got my full attention: What's up with the "alien video"?

To the OP: You'll like Oregon a great deal; it's a great place to live, and the gun perks are just fine, thanks very much.

There are plenty of ranges. One I know of is Tri County Gun Club that does High Power.
Also if you work in Portland there's an Indoor range close to the freeway for lunch-hour shooting at The Place to Shoot

One of the nice things is Oregon has no NFA restrictions. machine guns, suppressors, SBS/SBR, destructive devices are all ok. Don't know if the Multnomah Co. sherriff will sign off on them (Portland) but other areas around Portland will. There are several counties around Portland that are a 30-60min commute into downtown where you can get land without being a millionaire (usually looking at $200k+ for 10+ acres, the further you get from Portland the cheaper). Where I live sounds like a war zone on the weekends from everyone out plinking in their yard.

The carry reciprocity sucks but you can get a Utah out of state CHL and carry no prob. in surrounding states except California of course.

You can get a Washington concealed carry permit by going across the river to Clark County. Easy to do and there is good info on the Clark County net site.

Great place to live, Oregon has a ton of public land and most of it is open to hunt. Mule deer, elk, white tail, black bear, and cougar are all tags you can get pretty cheap and all can be hunted with in an hour or two of portland. With in an hour of portland there are a few ranges that hold IPSC events as well as other shooting sports. Once your a resident getting an oregon chl is easy, while oregon won't take any other states permit there are quite a few other states who take oregon's CC permit.
