Picked up on accident at an auction a Post 64 (1964) Model 70 in .300 Win mag. What happened was I called in a bid taking a gamble, the flyer described the rifle as a PRE 64 model but it ended up being made IN 1964. Threw a little money at it thinking I may have one of the first factory .300 Win Mag's in a Pre 64. When I saw what I'd bought when I went to do the transfer made me frown a little, as personally I'm a 'Claw Guy'. But that's what happens when you take gambles so I'm not too feelings hurt over the deal.

So I'm trying to clean it up and get it into real nice shape so that I don't take too bad of a haircut when I turn around to go sell it. It has the original Winchester barrel which I'm confident I can get looking pretty good with a standard good deep cleaning. The problem I'm having its trying to find which replacement open sights / bases I am going to need. I'm sure it had a ramped hooded front sight, just need to get a measurement of the threaded hole spacing but the rear sight is not a dovetail, but another set of threaded holes into the barrel. Is there a dovetail adapter to just put a folding sight on it or did Winchester do something completely different on this starting in '64?

Any help or pictures you guys might have would be of great help to me just so that I know what I need to try and get tracked down for this little project.

Thanks all!

Catalog is still a available, might be worth purchasing or if you can view it well enough (I can't on my phone) you could get an idea of what was there. Looks like ramped rifle sight and hooded front, best I can tell. http://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/item_desc.php?item_id=2305

I might have protested with the auction house for the inaccurate description as it is of course critical in your case. Good luck.

My 1964 M-70 30-06 has 2 holes and uses a Williams Guide Open Rear Sight, available from Midway.

The front sight holes are 2" apart, and the front ramp is also Williams.

The later post 64 used a much nicer proprietary folding rear sight with only one hole in the barrel, and kept the Williams ramped front sight.

While you may prefer CRF, the push feeds have been as or more accurate and more dependable for me.
