I've been carrying a piece of brass from a .45 ACP case in my right arm for probably ten or twelve years now. It's up against the bone, isn't worth trying to remove, and I've become rather attached to it.

If you ever find yourself having to clear a jam in a 1927 A-1 Thompson after you've released the trigger, be very careful.

Atticus:

:what: :what: :what:

It's like...a highway safety film.

My commitment to safe gun handling has been thoroughly and completely renewed.

unfortunately, I don't have pictures of either, but my only war wounds are thus: neatly lopped a chunck of thumb knuckle the first time I ever shot a handgun. after renting a P-O P14-45, I rented a Kahr K-40. something about how small it was had me wrap my left thumb over the right, like I had seen people do with revolvers. I sure learned not to do that in a hurry!!

the other one was a month or so ago shooting the M-N 91-30 that I had picked up. in just a t-shirt and jeans. 20 rounds left my shoulder bruised for more than a week. learned that lesson, too. when I picked up my M44 and brought both to the outdoor range, I wore a sweater over my t-shirt, with my M-65 field jacket(with liner) over that. much more comfortable.

I've had a few sessions busting pigeons and shooting everything else we had (.22 through 30-06) that left my shoulder purple and green.

We would go out near Bend, OR hunting for jack-rabbits and then shoot pigeons and stuff after beating the sage for a while. That is fun and leaves the bruised shoulder. The first couple minutes shooting the next day is when it really begins to hurt.

Hammer bite with several. Bolt bite from a Ruger RST-4 when I was a kid. 10mm brass ejected from my Delta Elite and straight down my collar to rest on my belt line. Left a mark, and I did the 3 stooges dance while the delighted onlookers clapped. Worst was shooting an out-of-time .44 magnum. (not mine) The forcing cone shaved much of the copper jacket off and I was pelted in the face enough to bleed in several wounds.

PPK slide bite, age 22. Learned the first time, I hope.

The only other thing I can report is lots of scratches from various kinds of thorns/stickers/brambles/sharp rocks/pointy sticks/cactus while hunting. And getting reeeeeally tired and thirsty when I used to hunt sage grouse.

Atc1man and Dizos, a guy once shot me with a pellet gun in the same place (Rt. b-cheek) while working in a hardware warehouse at age 18 — so I chased him down with a cattle prod and zapped him in the same spot. Both were merchandise that we were supposed to be shipping to stores rather than playing with. I don't do that kind of thing any more.

Aside from blood blisters, broken off fingernails, rail tracks on my thumb web, catching my thumbweb under the hammer of my FEG hi-power at SLIDELOCK.. ow ow ow ow... (mag disconnecter still in gun ow ow ow.. had to re-seat mag to let down hammer... youwza.) Hot brass from 45 bounced off barrier, hit me between the eyes hard enough to draw blood. Eyes and ears, folks.

While cleaning a Colt 1851 Navy, had the hammer go forward catching the edge of my thumb in the mechanism... yikes what a powerful spring that is.. and a lot of blood.

Stupidest: Bruising from shooting my 54 cal Hawken with hunting loads. Felt so bad I went to see an LPN about the stiffness in my shoulder.. when I took my shirt off she nearly gagged.. worst bruise she had ever seen. I brusied something deep, had a streak running from the point of my shoulder to the nipple, where the blood would pool. Was stiff for a week.

Did get a LOT of attention though.

I was 16, shooting pigeons in a pole barn with a POS FIE Single Action .22. I was fixing to head back inside, and saw one that I had previously missed. I unholstered the pile of cast zinc crap, thmbed the hammer back while it was still pointed at the ground, like a friggin idiot, broguth the gun to bear on the nice, fat squab, and realized the hammer was down. Looked down, and I had a nice little , barely noticeable hole in my right jeans leg, about two inches belwo the knee. No pain at that point, went inside, had a buddy drive mw to the emergency room. Once they cut my pants off, took some Xrays, and found the bullet had went into my leg, traveled completely down my leg, and came to a stop right under the skin next to my ankle. Shortly thereafter, I developed Compartment syndrome, extreme swelling whichj was cutting off the circulation to my leg. 4hrs in surgery, 44 staples, and a hell of a scar.

Later, when I got home, I tore the .22 down, and the sear had a a piec broken off of it, directly where the hammer rides at full cock...gun is still broken, sitting in my dresser drawer.

to the nipple, where the blood would pool. Was stiff for a week.

Please stop, you're making me hot.

Only gun related injury is from an ex-brother-in-law's Ruger .45. I have a little scar right between the eyes where I got a sound thwack from the ejected casing from the one and only round I fired from the POS.

Atticus, that looks downright painful. Reminds me of my cousin's injury--he lost part of his index finger repairing his car engine. He has fun with his though. He enjoys sticking the stub up his nose for family pics.

Hmm, scope eye from my RWS Model 48 (that's an air rifle, mind you). Bled pretty good, too. Small burns on my forehead from unburnt powder from an out of battery with an 8mm FN-49. Hammer bite from my BHP. Brass burns aplenty. That's about it for me.

only one so far

shooting G27 left-handed for the first time, and I forgot to keep my right thumb tucked below the slide in a proper grip. Result was a "vampire bite" scar on the first knuckle on my right thumb, where the slide rails each took a chunk!

Luckily, it was minor, but when I felt the pain and saw the blood start flowing while on the firing line, I was scared %@&!less. Still better than that range master who shot himself in the hand with a .40!!:uhoh:

had the palm of both my hands bruised from my BFR took about 2 months to totally heal. May have been microfractures....

22lr ricochets all the time, little blood here and there

now my friends have had much more than me

but the most severe injury I have to say is my hearing loss :(

Wow. Old thread.

I've crushed the skin on my hand in a Glock ejection port a couple times. Ow. Usually makes a nice blood blister. I guess 1911 style locking lugs are good for something.

I ripped a piece of skin off of my hand shooting full power 158 grain .357 magnum loads out of a 340PD revolver. It doesn't take more than 30 shots or so to do it. I tried to keep going... got the handle all bloody.

Sold it not too long afterwards.

Also, I've gotten nicked by my Glock's slide once or twice while shooting.

AD! (dumbass alert) Shot my big toe with a pellet gun. (I don't recommend it.)

Shot my pinky toe, here. BB went into the joint in my toe and stayed there for almost a week before I noticed the infection setting in. It hurt, but not THAT bad.

None the worse for wear. It was 25 years ago

The only firearms related injury I have ever suffered is a broken heart when my Marlin model 60 that I got for my 12th birthday was stolen. The one that I refinished the stock on when I was 16, the one that disappeared out of my closet when I was 25.

Caught a ricochet right in the neck from the copper jacket of a 9mm round shot from an H&K MP5. It apparently bounced off of a metal target frame during some tactical drilling.
Hurt like a bitch for a few months after.
Oh well, beats working for a living!

I took a 45 bounce back at a pin night to the arm. No penetration but hurt like no other. My friend took a bounce back in the head form a 40 to the face just left of is left eye just above the nose.

Starting at the head and moving down:
  • Scope gouge in forehead. Always check for loose rings when someone hands you a .45-70!
  • Gouge (now healed) on left cheek from jacket debris at an indoor range.
  • M1 thumb, of course, also
  • SKS thumb. See above.
  • Pistol palm, from working the slide with oily hands.
  • A welt from hot brass down the shirt (at least it didn't go down the pants!)
  • Small scar on left instep, caused by debris kicked up when idiot in the next lane shot the floor ("I said I was sorry!").
I guess it comes with the territory. Manly bits have, fortunately, remained pristine. I'm also quite paranoid about my hearing, which is still acute after 25 years of shooting.
