getting ready to load some 270 winchester ammo, im going to use 130 gr btsp what powder should i try, i dont load alot of rifle ammo so i dont want to buy 3 or 4 powders to work up a load, is there a load that normaly is a good load? im kina thinking of imr 4350, any thoughts? csa:confused:

4895 or 4046 are both pretty universal and great for mid sized cases, my 270 is shootig MOA using 3031 at the moment cause I had some I needed using up. All are IMR powders

(I think eliphalet meant IMR4064, not 4046 )Yes thanks for the correction.

I'd prefer IMR4831, RL-19, H4831, RL-22, or H4350 for the 130-150 Gr stuff (In that order of preference)

I prefer Varget and RL-15 for the 90-110 Gr bullets.

(I think eliphalet meant IMR4064, not 4046 )

If I were to pick one powder, I'd pick IMR4831, with no hesitation. Good velocity, and good accuracy with 110gr-160gr. I believe this is what most manuals and 'Pet Loads' found too.

I've found .270 Win to be very, very easy to load for. It seems quite tolerant of a wide span of bullet weights and charges.

One note: You were going to try boat-tail soft points. I've gotten good results from Seirra GameKings (3/4 to 1 MOA), but in most every cartridge I shoot, the flat based Spitzers shoot better. Both Sierra's 130 Gr Spitzer and the Hornady Soft Points with the flat bases shoot groups about half as big. To 300 yards or so, the boat-tail won't make much of a difference.

IMR 4064 is an excellent choice for the .270.
My Ruger #1 really likes the 140 Sierra gr. Gameking over 44 grs 4064.
I've taken several Whitetails with this combo one at 320 yards.

I've tried H4831, H4350, IMR4831 and IMR4350. My best groups are with IMR4831 and 130g Sierra Game Kings, 1/2 " 3-shot 3/4" 5-shot @ 100yds

I`d hazard more H4831 has been burnt behind a 130 gr 270 bullet then any other powder. It`s a classic load........

my .270 likes 150gr hornady interlocks, with 57gr of reloader 22.

H4831....150 gr bullet....3000 fps...and under 1 " at 300 yards...out of a Ruger M77 or a Rem 700.

RELOADER 22 gives me the best velocities at any bullet weight, but I use H4831SC mostly because it's easier to find and reasonably fast and quite accurate.

I just loaded some Hornady 130 gr SST's with 49 gr of RL19 and CCI 200 primers and was able to group about an inch (5 shots) at 100 yards out of my Sauer 202 Outback with a 22 inch barrel. I haven't chronographed it but should be 2550+/-.

I mainly shoot 150 gr bullets out of my 270's but bought the 130 gr SST blems from Midway to give them a try, and they shoot great.

130s

I use AA3100 on all my .270s With 150 gr,bullets.
AA3100 can be used for the 130s also. I get pretty fair accuracy from this powder as I'm sure others would probably work well also.
Go by the book . 3000 fps from 150 grainers is really cooking that bullet.
Top load I could find for H4350 shows around 2650 fps.

I've had best luck with the Reloader powders in the '06 class of cartridges. RL22 has given the best accuracy/velocity in my .25/06.
