Anyone ever received a cannister of powder that has been tampered with? I just received an 8 lb cannister of Alliant MP 300 from Natchez that had the plastic seal broken on the lid and the internal foam/paper seal was not attached to the mouth of the jug inside. I called Natchez and they said they would submit something to UPS who would get back to me within 5 days. I don't know whether someone decided to inspect the contents, whether some was removed or what? But I can't use it until I know more. It was expensive and shipping was expensive!

I've seen that a lot on the 'new' plastic powder containers.

It just don't stick to the plastic very well.

I think the last 4, 1 pond bottles of W-748 I got all had loose foam cap seals.

    Nothing to worry about.

I have not seen any Alliant powder with a 'plastic seal' on the outside of the lid.
But I haven't bought any Alliant powder in quite a while either.

I had this same issue with a 1 pound bottle (ironically enough, it was also mp300) that I bought at sportsman's warehouse. I weighed it and it was 1 pound.... I would assume nothing was wrong with it since I have already used it all.

RC is right. I have a new 8lb keg of H1000 that the seal isn't attached but in a small area. I watched the LGS owner get it straight from the distributors box.

The seals come off with the lid, since the glue used can't stick to the plastic very well. I seriously doubt anyone "tampered" with your powder.

Powders only started getting seals when some fool put poison in some Tylenol a number of years ago and put it back on the shelf to throw people off the fact he poisoned his wife.

We used to buy powders in bulk and in paper bags, and never gave it a second thought.

    Hope this helps.

f there was a note on the box from Cusoms/ICE/Postmaster that said they inspected your parcel, then it was tampered with. If there is no such note, then your parcel was not tampered with by any so-call Government Agency. In my experience. I have noticed the loose tops and stuff and did the same investigation by calling. After ordering a few jugs over the years I have come to expect it

Those little Tylenol mylar/foam seals on the powder canisters are worthless. Unless you shoot Red-Dot. lolz

The 8lb jug of Unique I ordered a few weeks ago came just like that as well. A plastic seal something like you'd see on a milk jug around the neck had been broken, and the foam cap had been torn off. It was mail ordered so sending it back wasn't an option. I'm not worried about it, but if I had seen it on a store shelf and another sitting beside it without a broken seal, I would have taken the sealed jug first.
Oh well, It still weighed what it was supposed to, we'll see how it shoots.

I've opened a lot of new powder canisters that the seals came off upon opening, which made it appear that it had been tampered with. But that doesn't mean someone didn't open it before I did, I've actually seen more than one person open powder up in the stores before. To me, this is a good reason for store's to keep powders behind the counter with a powder display consisting of only labels available to the customer so they what is currently in stock. This is something many stores are doing, but there are still a few like SWH that leave them out and at risk of being tampered with.

There was a thread on this same topic a couple of months ago. Same conclusions.

Same thing happened with the last 4lb jugs of Bullseye that I got,its simply the seal not sticking and it gets pulled off by the cap.

Thanks gentlemen for your replies. I also posted the same thread on "Ruger Forum.net". What disturbs me is that there is a milk jug type ring on the outside that usually break loose when you twist the lid for the first time and that was already broken. I would not have bought the jug off the shelf at the local supplier like that so am a little upset about getting one in the mail like that. But I weighed the jug and it doesn't appear that any is missing, its just already been opened and my confidence in what is really inside the jug is shaken.

The op is right, my 8 pound jugs from Alliant have the tamper resistant seal similar to a milk jug. In fact they are pretty tough, I cut mine off with a knife. That seal would not break on its own, it is hard plastic attached to the screw on cap. If that thing is broken, the jug was opened ~ no doubt about it.

Hmm, it sounds like they have a new cap, if it's like a milk jug and all.

    Yeah there are two seals

Outer seal is hard plastic and is molded to and connects both the cap and the jug. To break it you have to either use a knife or turn the lid with sufficient force to break the plastic like a milk jug but a bit stronger.

Inner seal is a cheap thin sheet of foam between the cap and the jug. Mine is stuck inside the lid.

I wish they'd use like an aluminum/mylar type seal/inner seal like on radiator fluid and the like. You actually have to use a knife or such to compromise that seal.

I just bought 2- 1lb cans of Bullseye from my LGS. Neither had a seal inside the cap. And the caps weren't on that tight either...

    Does it weigh 8 lbs?

I really wouldn't give it any thought. I'd just use it and be happy.

Some things I do when doing mail order shipments.

I always video the packing of a packing I send to someone that buys from me on ebay. It shows the condition of the product when it was taped up, sealed, and mailed to the buyer.

I always take pictures of packages that I receive, or record me opening a box that I receive. That way there is proof that I did not open the box, and tamper with it.

These are just some things I do to protect myself. I don't have to pay for film any longer. There isn't a cost for development. So why not take the extra steps to prove my case. Just in case something like this happens I have proof to backup my side of the story.

I recently got an eight pound jug of Unique and its plastic top was open, and the foam seal was also as you say. Seems to be fine, sounds like this is typical.

Natchez called me yesterday and said that UPS would pick up the product for inspection/return. The person I talked to with Natchez said the seal on the outside should not have been broken and that they would take care of the problem. Will keep updating this thread as things rock along. There may have very well been nothing wrong with the powder cannister, but who knows? I would not have purchased a cannister off the shelf at my local gun store with the seal broken.

    Same Experience

I had the same experience with a 1 lb container of W 748. I always wondered if it had been tampered with. I used it and shot some of the most accurate 223 Rem loads I had ever seen.:banghead:

My local shop gets it in regularly, and I have another good place about a 45 min drive away that does as well.

Just want to follow up on this and let everyone know about the outcome with the tampered powder and Natchez. Must say I'm impressed with Natchez through this ordeal. Natchez had UPS pick it up and after they received it they credited my card with the original purchase price of the powder. I noticed they had the same powder in stock and called them to see about getting another canister of powder rather than a credit (because I justified the original 27.50 hazard shipping charges by ordering in bulk!) They said they could do that. They sent me another 8# of powder with no shipping charges. They told me they would have to charge for the hazard shipping again, but would credit me for that a day or two after shipping. They did what they said and I am a happy customer. By the way, loaded up some 158 grain SWC Missouri Bullets on Sunday and was very pleased with the Alliant 300 MP performance. Tried loads with 17, 17.5, 17.7, 18 and 18.3 grains of powder. Chrono'd 6 rounds from my 6" GP 100 loaded with 18 grains, CCI 500, and firm crimp at 1340 fps avg. No flattened primers or stiff extraction and no lead in the barrel! No velocity improvement at 18.3 grains, but also no pressure signs.
