I'm wondering if any of you guys that have worked with 10mm before have any suggestions for powders with this round? I'm not looking for a recipe really, I have plenty of manuals for that, just wondering if there is a powder or powders that stand out. It's mostly for hunting and I'll be on the "full power" side of the spectrum.

Thanks

At different times I have read of good loads with Blue Dot, 800x, Power Pistol, AA#9. Of those powders I can tell you this, 800x meters poorly. Poorly isnt a good description. Like its cousin 700x, its cornflakes in a can. AA#9 will probably be the best metering, with Power Pistol behind it. I have used Power pistol in 45acp and 9mm and found it to be a good pistol powder, but alas, have never reloaded for 10mm. I would at least look up some load data for these powders, and see if its in the performance range you are looking for. If not, the search continues.

Alliants data only lists GDHPs online, so I would look elsewhere for that data.

I've used plain old boring Unique in 10mm for years for both barely major USPSA loads and more potent stuff. Works fine and meters very well in my 550B which is nice.

I use AA9 & a 180gr XTP. Meters like fine sand. Never tried 800x only because I'm using a progressive, and AA9 gives me all the velocity I need...

Okay, thanks guys. I'll give the AA9 a whirl. I've got some of that and some Power Pistol, and load data for both.

I've used plain old boring Unique in 10mm for years for both barely major USPSA loads and more potent stuff.

I should really go ahead and get a chrono. I'd like to see how Unique did compared to other powders. I've always got Unique on hand.

FWIW I plan on trying a 135gr load w/ standard primers & Power Pistol, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Should get 'em smokin' out of my 610. :)

A 180 gr. Gold Dot or other jacketed bullet with an 11.0 grain charge of Blue Dot will get you close to 1300 fps.
Starting OAL is 1.250"
Primer CCI-300
FYI, this is a maximum charge and should be decreased 10% (1.1 grs.) and worked up from there.

Longshot with AA#9 coming in a close second. 800x is also great, but as ljnowell mentioned, it meters poorly.
All of these with 155gr or 180gr XTP's are very accurate.

I have tried various powders for my Colt Delta Elite and have found the best powder to use, bar none, is Alliant's Blue Dot. I have found that both AA 7 and 9 powders have extreme pressure spikes and wide velocities and SD when chronoing my loads.

Blue Dot and AA#7 are excellent powders for full charge 10mm. I have a pound of Power Pistol that I will try next.

loadedround, are those speeds that you're getting comparable to the speeds that are published? I believe the Alliant guide shows a 180 gr with 11 gr of Blue Dot pushing it at 1295 fp/s. Just curious to see how close it is.

Old Krow:
When I first chronographed my loads I was getting 25-30 fps less than the speer manual showed. My SD was less than 18 for almost all my loads and I found no signs of excess pressure and my fired primers looked normal (WLP). Cases were not bulged and resized nornaly. Email me if any further questions. :)

If you know how to work up loads, 800X will get more velocity than anything else I have tested.

I can reach intolerable recoil, so Power Pistol will get all the recoil I can take, and still meter, something that 800X is not good at.

If I don't like the flash at night, 3N37 will still get all the recoil I can stand and much less flash.

When I say "all the recoil I can stand" I mean that given the slide mass of the handguns available and the volume available for recoil springs, without the slide hitting the frame real hard and cases ejecting a long way... And my hand hurting for hours.
If I were hunting with a 10mm rifle, then I would be back to 800X and double compressed loads.

I tend to shoot a lot of AA7 reloads. AA9 gives a bit better velocity but at a significantly more expense for powder.

800x is my standard if I want to get real velocity though. It meters well out of my pr2000 for some reason. I get +/- 0.1 grn routinely. I believe it has to do with the shaking of the press during operation and that seems to settle the powder.

I've tried moderate target loads with Unique, Red Dot, 231, HS6, Bullseye and Green Dot.

Full power loads, Blue Dot.
