Just in case Bud's ever gets around to shipping my 10 mm pistol, I'd like to get some ammo loaded for it. To start, I bought Nosler 165 gr. JHP and Rainier plated 180 gr FP, since those were fairly cheap.

My tentative plan is to load some of the Noslers at moderate velocity for plinking, a few of those faster in case I actually want to insure real expansion for some reason, and the Rainiers at a fairly stout level for fun shooting. Can this all be done with one powder, or should I get at least two?

I like Blue Dot and IMR-800x. I've used AA-7 with "interesting" results and plan on working with it a little more.

It would be foolhardy to load a bunch of ammo for a gun you don't even have yet.

You need the gun in hand to do seating OAL tests in the actual chamber.
And run small batches of test loads to insure functioning before you load up a bunch of ammo that jams into the rifling, won't feed right, and doesn't cycle the slide.

Or worse!

In this case, as is usually the case, Patience is a Virtue!

rcmodel is correct.
You really want to have the gun with you.
That being said, I like Power Pistol and Blue Dot.

Point taken! But the nearest shop I know of with a good selection of powder is a dozen miles away, in a direction I go only once or twice a month. It's likely that I'll have a reason to go that way this weekend, so I'll probably pick up powder and primers then, so I'm ready if/when Bud's actually ships my pistol.

Power Pistol and AA#7 were pretty much at the top of my list from other reading I've done. I may have to flip a coin (or just go with PP to impress people in the neighboring lanes at the indoor range with the muzzle flash :) ).

You can always pick up the powder and primers anyways.
I just wouldn't load any at this time.

As for the powders, I have used AA#7 and it has provided pretty good results. Basically what the manual says. I don't like Blue Dot because of how loud it is. Recoil isn't a big deal since I have used mainly light loads.

Blue Dot gives some good "sturm und drang" for those times when you want to make noise, however in testing with a chrono I have found Blue Dot to be a bit sensitive so when I load with it I do it very carefully since I tend to load 10mm near the upper tolerances.

When I can find it in my area, I love how consistent Accurate #7 works for 10mm. Unfortunately it's not stocked often where I live.

AA#9 and Longshot for hunting loads. HS-6 for moderate and target loads. I tend to use 180 and 200 gr bullets. Longshot can provide some good velocities.

I like AA#7. You can do your case prep now before you get your pistol. Clean, resize, bell, and prime, after you pick your powder.

Oops. I have 150 gr. Noslers. I don't think they make a 165! How embarassing. :barf: At least that was an error in the safer direction, had I actually started working with that still in my head.

I think I will go with #7, since the only other powder I have is Unique, and PP's burn rate is not that different. #7 seems less redundant. Then I would need only something like Longshot or Lil Gun for crazy loads and maybe something like 231 or WST to have pretty much the full spectrum of handgun powders.

My spousal critter insisted on starting a complicated levain bread yesterday morning, which eliminated going up north from our schedule. That should give Bud's two more weeks to come through with the gun before I can actually get my hands on the powder.

I'm pretty disappointed in Bud's Gun Shop. I paid by credit card on Dec. 19, so they have no excuse for not shipping yet. It seems pretty clear they don't actually have the gun they "sold" me, despite showing it as in stock when I ordered.. I tried to email them Friday afternoon, but they had already shut down for the day. Their website had a big banner stating "new phone hours" until 10 PM, so that was unexpected. Not that this is a big surprise. I'd read plenty of similar negative comments.

If not for the local FFL fee, I would tell Bud's to Foxtrot off now and buy a new (or used) magnum revolver locally and get a 10 mm after the panic dies down...

Buds is probably just behind due to the holidays and all the panic buying going on.

Definitely don't reload before you get the pistol. I've had several 10mm's, and the last G20sf I bought back in 2012 would work the brass over pretty good, even with loads that were not very warm. I say that to say this, don't go crazy loading for the big Glock with a factory barrel, especially one that may not take a warm load very well. Glock chambers have improved, but are still more loose compared to aftermarket barrels guys use to load the 10mm above and beyond normal levels.

It's fun to reload, but stay safe doing it, and stick to manufacturers data in the stock Glock. An aftermarket setup will allow for warmer loads, but that doesn't mean there's no limit either. A 10mm is what it is, it's a service level cartridge. If you want big power, buy a .44 or something bigger. Nothing wrong with the 10mm, but don't be one of the people who lump it in with a magnum level revolver, like the .41 Mag. Whoever started the whole 10mm is like a .41 Mag thing needs slapped.

That said, when I loaded for the 10mm, I liked Power Pistol for 180's around 1200 fps and Longshot wasn't too bad, and would give about 1250-1275fps. Blue Dot wasn't bad, but it before velocity got high the brass was showing signs, kind of the same with Unique. Never really messed much with AA9, but I've heard it's not bad, I just never get anywhere near advertised velocities with AA powders, at least not with AA9 or AA5. Maybe it's my particular batches though. I realized one day I can get 10mm like velocity from my 6" barreled .40 with less powder, so I consolidated and got rid of the 10.

Blue Dot and AA#7 are great powders for full or near-full power 10mm with 180 JHP.

For me, BlueDot at low to mid range loads showed poor accuracy. HS-6 and HP-38 were very good at mid range. I was using 165gr plate Berry's Bullets (not the thick plate version) so I had to stay below 1150fps.

Every powder can usually be used in many cartridges but has the one cartridge where it really shines. For the 40S&W/10mm that powder is Longshot. There are other powders that will do a good job with the 10mm but Longshot does a great job!

If HS-7 were still available I would recommend it but since it's no longer available Longshot is the powder for you... (all IMO of course)

Yes, I have been drooling over the Longshot numbers for heavy bullets, but I'm not planning to shoot screaming hot loads all the time. How does Longshot behave right around the starting load? I don't see any data for it with light bullets.

At the moment, I'm resistant to buying a powder for one load in one gun. I don't shoot enough to ever use up a pound that way. Probably in a year I'll go crazy and start doing that...

I am only loading for .32-20 right now. I'm planning to get a magnum revolver "with all deliberate speed" (I procrastinate, so could be a while...also, I need to save up a few bucks), probably a .44, maybe a .357. Until I make that decision, I'll probably hold off in looking for too many new powders. Unfortunately, it looks like Lil Gun is good in all the revolvers, but not in 10 mm, while Longshot looks much better in the 10 mm then in the revolvers. AA #7 has decent numbers in all of them (unofficial loads for the .32-20), so it seems like a versatile choice that is not Unique.

I sent Bud's an irate email yesterday (had to use the Billing Question option since the more appropriate Tracking Numbers option claimed they were closed, even though it was Monday morning.) When I threatened to cancel the order if they couldn't tell me when it would ship, they suddenly managed to send the gun to the shipping department. Or so they claim. Still no tracking number or notice that it has shipped. NEVER AGAIN WILL I USE BUD'S GUN SHOP!!!

Blue Dot for me...

I use Blue Dot almost exclusively for my Glock 20 10mm. It is simply my go to powder. I have ventured away and used Power Pistol but other than pronounced recoil I don't see any velocity increases. You use less powder with the Power Pistol but you will notice more recoil. Good Shooting!

After another 48 hours of radio silence from Bud's and another irate message from me, they sent a tracking number for a package that was submitted to UPS yesterday afternoon. Terrible customer service, but at least it looks like I can get to work cracking the slide on that gun soon!
