Practical uses for Kershaw Outcast?

I want one, but I just really don't know what I'd do with it. I need to justify it somehow logically because I need a fixed blade knife like a hole in the head.

Seems to big for all-purpose camp knife, and a bit too small for use as a machete, and not as good as an actual hatchet for use as a hatchet. Kind of a jack of all trades; master of none....

Really, it's best use would probably be self-defense, and I've got that base well-covered. Anyone have one? Find yourself actually using it when camping, etc.? Thanks.

An Air Force survival instructor I used to know claimed that a good 12" machete was the most generally useful size. Ontario still makes a plain ol' 12 machete, I just ordered a couple more this week, about $18 each IIRC.

I got one at Blade 2005 after meeting Ken Onion and talking to him about it. Neat knife. I don't know what it's good for as it has sat on a shelf ever since, along with all the other fixed blades I bought.

Years ago I bought a BK7 thinking I "needed" a big honkin' camp knife. It was a blast when I got it. Knocking tree limbs down, battoning through logs, chopping. Even stabbed it through the roof of a vehicle to test the tip.

Jack of all trades - Master of none is spot on. To me, they're like JetSki's/Personal Water Craft. An absolute HOOT for the first couple hours. Still a bit of fun after the initial grin factor fades, but will eventually be a dust collector.

With all that said, Buy it. (didn't expect that did ya?)

The way things are right now, you can pick one up for under $70, abuse it for a while, have your fun with it, then sell it of you don't like it. You'll lose a couple bucks. Probably less than you'd spend at the movie theater today for 90 minutes of entertainment.

Worth even more that the money spent/lost will be the experience and education. Didn't mom ever tell you, "how do you know you don't like spinach? You've never tried it."

Now here's the survival show that used it that I saw that will startle you.

Feasting on Asphalt with Alton Brown. Yes, Alton Brown. Yes, a Food Network show. On the canoe trip phase of following the Mississippi River north AB makes a native grill to cook on using river willows. What does he use to chop them loose and then strip the branches to make the "grill"? Yup, a D2 Outcast. Digs a little pit with it. Cuts up some meat with it. Looks like he knows how to use a knife.

Of course since he's a fellow knife junkie and shows up at the Blade Show and worked with Ken Onion on the Shun line ya might begin to think the food geek could be a knife geek also.
