preferred .223 for ar-15

So I just picked up a new Windham WW-15 yesterday. Never fired one before but looking forward to having some fun shooting it. It's a 1-9 twist.

So now I need to find ammo but I can wait for prices to come back down. What ammo brand do you recommend? Just an fyi, I will save the cases to reload. So steel cases are not preferred. My local range does not allow FMJ. This will mostly be a range gun but may see some hunting.

Some steel -- Tula, primarily, but also some Wolf -- can be easily reloaded, actually.

Right now the ammo inventory is so thin that you'll be lucky to find just about anything in stock.

I can't imagine that any serious, experienced reloader would use steel cases. Winchester white box is o.k. I'd suggest that you verify that your range won't permit fmj. Most that prohibit anything prohibit steel core and/or steel cases.

I shoot at two indoor ranges in the Atlanta area; both are o.k. with fmj, up to 50 bmg.

I prefer anything that doesn't have a crimped primer pocket. I don't think I've ever seen a Remington pocket that is crimped. Honestly though I will shoot every brand of brass I can get my hands on. Right now shooting what you can find is the most common thing done. If FMJ is excluded from your list look to see which major brands have cheaply priced HP/SP ammo. Fiocchi and PRVI are the two brands that come to mind for me. Fiocchi loads ammo with some good quality Hornady bullets as well.

I like Hornady a lot. But I also use the cheaper stuff as long as it isn't steel cased. PMC XTAC is one of my favorites of the cheaper variety.

Reloading is not the only reason to avoid steel cases. I have read that AR's don't like steel cases, and since my AR is a precision engineered machine, I won't take a chance on it one way or another.
