Prescription Eyewear and Personal Safety

I wear glasses.

If there's a bump in the night that's another thing I'm going to have to find in the dark before grabbing the pistol, burning up precious seconds.

When travelling or in the field playing, I have to pack a spare pair of older glasses in case I lose or break my primaries.

If a misunderstood individual of different socioeconomic status hits me upside the head while politely asking for money in compensation for his/her disadvantaged childhood, I may lose them and be injured/dead as a result.

I understand the military is doing laser eye surgery now for some troops for the same reason.

I like my glasses as a fashion accessory--they have carbon fiber trim--so in no way would I ditch them for vanity reasons, but should I save up for laser eye surgery for safety reasons?

Laser surgery does not work all the time. Some folks go back to poor vision.

If you are going to have the procedure done ask tons of questions. What are the risks? How many of these have you done? Etc.........

It has worked wonders for some folks!

Contacts seem like the best solution!
The problem was- there was a time when you had to take off contacts and put them on, on a daily basis- until now!

There is a new type of contacts- and you can leave them on for a month- you sleep in them and replace them in the end of the month. They seem like a perfect (as well as safe) alternative to LASIK surgery. I would think twice before I let a doctor cut open my eyes using a laser- I've seen Goldfinger too many times to do that.

The extended wear lenses can be a problem for people who have a lot of goop in their eyes.

The other problem with contacts is that they are absorbant - and there are things in the air at the range that I do not want absorbed by my eye-wear.

As for laser surgery, in most cases, they success rate is like ~99% and I have heard that most of the problems are due to patients not following proper post op procedures. However, some people do get majorly messed up. Remember "it's not the odds, it's whats at stake".

Personally, if I could afford it, I would do the LASIK right now. I have enough other problems and my vision is so bad its scary (uncorrected).

If I was doing LASIK, I would consider doing 1 eye at a time - that way, if one is really fubar, you still got the other one

They say that if you dont do it in your 20s, most people are having kids and buying houses in their 30s and in your 40s, you get - whats that condition called? that makes you still need reading glasses if you do it.

Personally, I would not mind only having to wear reading glasses - beats wearing them all the time.

Also - most glasses are not adequate protection for shooting - I have got junk in my eye from revolver spray from other people, etc.

It all depends on what is causing the vision problem

Ask your eye doctor! Mine says I am not a good candidate for laser because it is the aging process so I bought the$400 Oakley's with my distance perscription in them. For bed time emergency shooting, start practicing without sighting and you'll be fine!Either that or get a 12 gauge!

Having laser surgery is a possible option. It is something that should be very carefully considered. A really competent surgeon is a must. Mine was. I had the lasik procedure, and I went from 20/400 to 20/20.

If surgery is not a viable option, then seriously consider contact lenses. I used to wear them, and the ones I had were excellent.

It is definitely worth checking into.

Not touching MY EYES!!!

With that frelling laser scalpel, no way now how no sirreBOB!! At least not until I can get a new set grown to replace these if they get hosed up. But then, if I can get a replacement pair grown, may as well have 'em grown with correct vision to begin with. "better than 20/20, and they are BLUE!"

Last time I got my eyes examined, I inquired about the extended wear. Optical Doc does not like 'em, and my eyes get kinda gritty feeling after having my daily wears in for about 14-16 hours. So no go there for me.

So its contacts and glasses for me. My vision corrects to nearly 20/20 with contacts (I can pick out twigs and leaves at 100+ yards with them in). Keep the glasses not 6 inches from the head when sleeping, and I keep the 12 guage w/in arms reach as well.

Of the 6 people I know that have had the procedure, only 3 have had NO adverse affects. One has limited night vision as a result, one had to have it re-done w/in 1st year, and one is using glasses again (to a lesser extent than before).
I wouldn't let anyone touch my eyes unless they really had to

I have wore glasses for so long that I feel naked without them. The easiest and probably best solution is practice shooting at five, seven, and ten yards without glasses. Make sure to shoot in bright light as well as low light conditions. I do this on occasion and am very comfortable with the results. A cheap effective solution to a problem and you get more range time.
