I want an M1A.

Unfortunately, that's a bit out of my budget.

So, I decided that I might get a used one.

Possible to get any used ones under $700?

Possible, but unlikely. You could find a Norinco or Poly for that price if you look around.

last used one I saw was a standard model birch stock with 300rnds through it for $1000, including 900rnds of South African .308.

You are probably only going to find a Polytech in your suggested price range. Used Springfeilds run 900+(closer to 1000+) around here.

I know it's not the exact same as an M1A, but have you considerd an M1 Garand?

Considering that you can get one for $295 from the Civilian Marksmanship Project (www.odcmp.com), that should be pretty comfortably within your price range.

Another $200 or so could get a brand-new .308 barrel onto it as well, and still $200 below your budget, and made in the USA, vice Red China for the less-expensive M14s.

Not exactly what you were looking for, but certainly not a bad compromise.

m1a

Possible ,but rare? i got a SA from aaa pawn for $850.00 with scope and mount back in Oct 04,put most of it on Visa and have probably lost the savings due to interest. seems we have seen them in private sale ads around that price. not lalely tho. :uhoh:

There was a used Polytech at a local shop for $799 recently. Being used they might have come down on the price a bit.

I ended up with a Polytech for $600 but I needed to replace the bolt and eventually the barrel. Still, all up it was less than a "standard" SA and the quality was better in most areas. I retroed a GI stock and some other bits and pieces and have a fantastic tack driver.
