I've come to AZ, staying at a great couple's guesthouse in Sedona. They've never been shooting, but want to try. I think they've been anti-gun until now.
They have a small horse farm in Carefree, but too close to neighbors on 25 acres.
They've heard of too many shootings at public rangesin Phoenix to be comfortable at public ranges. I'd love to have a chance to convert 2 more people.
I live in a tiny town in South Carolina. I am a member of a great local range, Belton Gun Club, so I don't know this area. Any help please?

Ben Avery Shooting Facility on Carefree Hwy is just West of Carefree It's a very carefully run Public Range.

If you want a private range I'd recommend Shooter's World on 28th Ave and Indian School. Nice people and a decent range.

That was my first choice too. Just 25 minutes from their home. They turned it down. Thanks for the repy.

I didn't read your 2nd paragraph. I will look into those as posible.

Do they have some type of tractor?

A packed dirt berm makes a good backstop to shoot into. 25 acres is a lot of room to set up to shoot on.

They do have a natural hill at the back end. They're afraid of noise for their neighbors, but that might have to be the place

I'd be interested to hear their source citation on all the shootings at public ranges in Phoenix, especially Ben Avery.

No idea, that's just what they're telling me. I just want to show them what gun shooting is really like.

Drive up Oak Creek canyon from Sedona and then west onto State, BLM or National Forest ground. Get an interagency map that shows open roads. And verify with the land managers that these areas are currently open to target shooting. You should be able to find many suitable locations to shoot safely.

As extra safety precautions, don't shoot steel-core ammo and be prepared with plenty of water to put out small fires. The western drought has been severe. Flagstaff has had a big fire already this spring, and you don't want to start another one. This is VERY different than conditions in SC.

Ben Avery if you have a gun to shoot.

If you need to rent one, and want some instruction Shooters World or Scottsdale Gunclub will take care of everything.

I've lived in AZ my whole life. Never seen a shooting on a public range, at Ben Avery that wouldn't go well, many range officers and safety is enforced strongly.

Now in the desert like Table Mesa, I've run into many idiots and won't shoot there anymore.

Suggest you reconsider your decision not to use public ranges. My wife and I rented a place for a month in Sedona and we always take our pistols along on such trips. We visited a state park just outside of Sedona and were pleased to learn that they have public shooting areas. We asked if any special rules applied to the areas and the ranger smiled and said, "Be careful". We used the range 3X during our stay and experienced no difficulty at all. In fact, very few people used the range and most of the time we were alone. I do understand and respect your reluctance. Here in NE Kansas where I live, I no longer hunt on public access land. Too many people and too many potential problems. But, my experience in Sedona was very positive.

Thank you I'll check them out. I'm not ruling out public ranges, but these first time shooters are worried about them

I brought a Ruger Single Six 22 so I can start them with CBs go to CC quiets, and then 22lr. Also brought my 9mm Shield for regular gun. I want them to get used to it before they go big. I could only fit 2 guns in my case for air travel otherwise I'd start center fires with a heavier gun.

They should be worried more about unregulated ranges. Private backyard/ pasture ranges would be best.

Another AZ story: My wife and I spent 10 days in Scottsdale a few years ago. Since I always look for shooting opportunities, I went to a gun shop and asked the young man who was helping me where they go to shoot outdoors. After looking at me like I was an idiot, he said, "We just take our targets, go out a-ways, find a spot, set up our stuff and shoot." With further discussion he said there is ample public land, mostly federally controlled BLM land. Most of the federal or state controlled land in Kansas is off limits for casual shooting.

Another vote for Ben Avery. I have shot there a couple of times.
If I was going shooting myself, I'd go there. I have a chance to take a couple, who have never touched a gun, shooting for the first time. I have offered several public ranges to them and they just don't want to go there. I may have to shoot in their back acre if they are out of the city limits. They want to nail a target to a tree in an empty field, but they're afraid of scaring their prized prize winng Arabian horses. Thanks for listening.

Sounds like they are CA transplants.

When I was in high school, I worked in a shoe store (yes a real shoestore). I would measure a woman's foot and bring the appropriate size until she saw the size 9. Said she wears a size 7 1/2 to 8.

They always wanted a shoe that was larger on the inside than it said on the outside. Sounds like a similar case for their "desired" shooting range. Really weak backstop

I have long skinny property, my range is 1000’ from my house. My wife can’t hear me shooting .22/9/.45 when she’s inside. Unless neighbors house is near backend I can’t imagine the noise would be a problem.

I’ve done this in a couple different places along I-10 west of Phoenix. I just looked at the map for open space and a dirt road.

I sure hope it won't be. I'm starting off with quiet Aquiia Hummingbird CBs. 9mm Lugar last.
