Pro gun magazines that are not gun mags

I was really shocked when I was at the book store the other day and checking out a Popular Mechanics with T3 on the cover, I flip a page and found a Ruger rebate ad. And I was like, wow, that was unexpected!

And then they had an article how it is stupid to rely on the "smart" guns that might work only 80% of the time, how even the cops don't want them, etc etc.

It was really a surprise. Are there any other mags that surprised you with gun stuff that wasn't expected?

I recieved the October '02 "Machine Design" to find the HK MP7 on the front cover and an in depth article describing design features and engineering principles and logic. It was called "Targeting the perfect bullet" is small and fast better than large and slow ? After reading the article I thought "hmmmm, I'd like to have one of those"

Wired Magazine had a schematic on a 'next-generation' rifle. I can't find the issue right now. If I remember correctly it yet another caliber down-size (.17) with plenty of electronic toys including night vision, range finder, automatic zero adjustment. Fun stuff, presented in a factual manor that surprised me. I thought they would take a obligatory jab at the gun-nut culture. Of course the gun seemed to me to just be a conversation piece: high-tech to the point of "Please wait while your gun re-boots."

Reason Magazine is very pro-gun (like, Duh! It's libertarian)

Good analysis of policy issues to boot.

Modern Applications News is a magazine for the metalworking industry and is VERY firearms friendly. It has featured Ruger's metallurgy and EDM Arms' Windrunner 50 cal. recently.
The editor loves this stuff.

National Review runs an occasional article that is 2nd Amendment friendly.
National Review On Line has Dave Kopel as a commentator and runs more gun- friendly stuff than the parent magazine.

can't say that these mags are pro-gun per se, but Flying magazine and Plane and Pilot have both featured ads for gun makes. they came out in the magazines immediately following congressional approval of armed pilots.

As Dorrin79 points out, one sort of expect Libertarian magazines to be pro-gun, and "Reason" is reliably so. "Liberty" is also quite strongly pro-gun rights.

Brock Yates' column in this past issue uncorks on Michael Moore pretty hilariously. Once upon a time, they did a very funny comparison test: "Beretta vs. Beretta". The Italian pistol had much better acceleration and top speed than the less-than ballistic Chevy, but wasn't so good on corners...

Popular Mechanics has had articles about guns as well. I have read one where they compared modern single action revolvers.

Car & Driver is usually pretty much on the side of the angels.

I remarked to Jim Scoutten one time that he should teach those Car and Driver guys to shoot. He said they were all gun guys already. "It's all internal combustion," he says. Heard a piece on NPR about "bulletproof" vehicles being all the rage in Argentina, and they were talking to Csaba Csere about it. He said the editorial staff could amass quite an arsenal to test these cars with.

The Weekly Standard is solidly pro Second Amendment, though perhaps a little on the conservative side for the more libertarian-leaning THR members.

Popular Mechanics is hard core pro-guns/pro 2nd amendment. They even said so themselves in a response to one of their readers who complained about how they glorified the upcoming M16 replacement.

World magazine is a conservative Christian weekly that is always pro 2nd-amendment. They won't run a related story, however, unless it's already making national headlines. At least that's been my observation.

That was my impression too, though I'm usually too busy drooling over the "Impossible Huge-Horspower-Mobiles You Will Never Own Compro!"

I finally gave in and subscribed to PM because of their consistently pro 2A stance. I may have to resubscribe to Car & Driver now that I know of theirs as well.

Not any more. His relationship to C&D pretty much ran straight through ex-ed David E. Davis. When Davis left to found Automobile, that's where PJ's freelance stories started turning up. (Including the wonderful Die, Eco-Weenies! )

Good topic! I have to subscribe to PM. I had no idea!

Modern Survival (www.modernsurvival.net) is the followon to the now sadly defunct American Survival Guide. ASG briefly was taken over by Y Visionary Publications, which changed it to Self Reliance Journal and removed almost all gun content from the magazine. They started leaking money right away, but refused to listen to common sense. The magazine folded soon afterward.

Now, at least, we can find firearm articles in a survival magazine again. They even feature guns on the "cover!" What a concept!
