HI I went to the range this weekend and my bolt jammed up on I had to take rifle apart and pry open the bolt with a screwdriver and hammer what could cause this to jam up like this?

What kind of ammo were you using? 1 possibility short of a mechanical failure of some kind is a problem with the casing on the last round you fired.

Not enough info to diagnose the problem. Did the round jam up as you tried to chamber it or after it had fired? Also, whose M855 were you shooting? Federal? Olympic? Radway Green? What does thea headstamp say?

On the rifle, what kind of chamber does it have? Who manufactured it? What markings are on the barrel?

Off the top of my head, it sounds like you fired 5.56mm ammo in a .223 match chamber and the brass stuck to the wall from overpressure.

Was there any bubble gum in the chamber? Pine sap? What about glue, was there any glue? Sounds like you have glue in your gun.:D

A buddy of mine had his jam up like that one time when he didn't screw the buffer tube in far enough. The little pin and spring popped out and jammed up the action.

To unjam, grab charging handle and while pulling it buttstoking the rifle will usually clear it. Of course take the necessary safety precautions.

Clean the bolt lugs on the bolt and the barrel extension. Look for debris. Also clean the gas rings. What'd the round look like? Was it a live round or spent?

???????????? Never need to pry an AR apart with a hammer and a screwdriver and I have been working on M16 type rifles for the better part of 25 years now.

Prying anything apart on the M16 type platform usually results in irrepairable damage.
