Problems with the NRA

I knew when I joined the nra that they called and mailed soliciting donations. I use a answer machine to screen calls. they never leave a message and I can see on caller ID who it was.

It's kinda hard to send donations when the Executive President/CEO gets $1 million plus salary,Executive V.P wayne gets $800,000+ salary, and E. Director chris gets $600,000+ salary. James Porter "president" (like charlton heston) gets $1

My BIGGEST beef with them (and I wrote Wayne personally) was that they needed a President that had charisma, national recognition, younger and would appeal to All ethnic people and women. The guy they have in there now (porter) is a good guy but has no national name recognition and is an old white guy. (and i can say that cause I'm a old white guy)

In my letter to Wayne I told him that I would not be giving any extra money to the NRA until they changed Presidents. I even sent a list of gun friendly national figures that had broad appeal and all I got back was a condescending letter from a secretary.

So, no more money to the NRA except my 2 year renewal.

my 2 cents

I would like to bring up a point probably worth mentioning. BYTW I'm a life member, been one since 1971.

As several have mentioned, the NRA is the premier lobbying organization in Washington these days. They DO have their finger on the pulse of Congress and they DO know how to get the membership riled up when it's really necessary.

I too get the occasional call seeking donations and sometimes I just don't answer the phone when I see a blocked number or a 202 area code. Same with northern Virginia codes. But I do make somewhat regular donations to NRA/ILA.

However, I would like to ask each of you who get mad when the NRA calls asking for money: Do you EVER do anything to help the NRA or ILA? Other than bi**h about it, I mean. If we can't send them a donation once in a while, you can be sure the anti-2A crowd will win in the end, and that end may come sooner than we imagine. Make no mistake, they are building up HUGE bucks from a lot of wealthy donors. We need to try to do the same, except most of us are not wealthy.

Look at what Obama did pre-2006: Lots of small donations grew into a huge pile of money. We can do the same IF we just occasionally make a donation. End of rant.

12131,yeah, I hear ya!

Actually on the list I sent to Wayne L.P. was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie both are positive on gun rights and ownership. Maybe Co-presidents?

I don't think the NRA is interested in fighting against gun laws. They make too much money off of them. If they were truly out to end oppression, they would go after the NFA. Barring that, they should be attacking the Hughes Amendment and working to eliminate silencers and SBRs from the NFA.

One thing I dislike about the NRA is their apparent hostility to NFA weapons and other military style weapons, even civilian semi auto versions of machine pistols, subguns, assault rifles, MG's etc.

I've seen indications where they could care less if more legislation is passed against those types of weapons, or they're willing to sacrifice them for other favorable gun laws. Perhaps because they are not traditional "sporting" weapons.

Haven't had any telemarketers call since I dorpped the landline and just use my cell. It got to the point where I was spending $30/month and the only people who ever called that number were people I didn't want to talk to.

All you have to is call them and tell then to quit all the calls, emails and mail and it'll stop. I did this long ago and now all I get is the magazine and an occasional letter for a special offer.

You'd be wrong. This last go round after Sandy Hook we all saw activity out of the NRA, but what counted was all the quiet behind the scenes work in the Halls of Congress and out at the state level the helped make sure the Reps and Senators had been well briefed on the 2A, the NRA's position on legislation limiting the rights of Americans, and the NRA's response to threats to those rights. The real work gets done quietly on a daily basis and doesn't consist of cheerleaders and podium pounding.

medalguy,

Well said.

They have yet to call me. All I receive from them is my American Rifleman...
Same here, after 30 years the last decade has finally been quiet. I wrote them a nice letter about 10 years ago and that fixed the continuous call problems. I do support the NRA but I do not need an endless barrage of calls seeking additional donations. I appreciate the lobbying and representation they afford me.

Just directly contact the NRA, do not bother telling the solicitors (professional fund raisers that call).

Could you please point out an event of that occurring recently? Not in the 80s or 70s, but currently?

I just didn't forget.

They should actively be seeking to repeal NFA, parts of 1968GCA, brady bill, lautenberg amendment, 1986 law, etc etc, aggressive and rabidly.

I think for every gun law liberals propose, one current one needs to be struck down in it's place.

But this is heading off topic now.

I don't have a home phone. The one listed on my Membership from 1983 has been dead for 18 years. As a Life Endowment member I have given all I can. Also anyone calling your cellphone for a donation or membership (regardless of affiliation) is violating federal law already. You can get $$$ from them, just go see one of the Ambulance Chaser Lawyers about that. Cellphone number are already on the "Do Not Call List".

I'm a life member and they do a lot of good for us. That said, while I do get e-mails (I put myself on the ILA e-mail list) and probably weekly letters, I have never gotten a phone call from them.

That may also be because as a rule I do not answer any 800/888 phone call. I figure if it's real important they will leave a message, 9 out 10 times they don't.

What i do is, i sign up new members, family/friends that don't have the $ to do so, in hope that at renew time, they will keep it going...

Cell rang at 5pm. I was sitting in a dear blind.
Why in the world would you have your phone turned on while hunting?

I carry mine with me while hunting, but it is turned off. I figure if I need it to make an emergency call or something, I can always turn it on. But if I leave it on, it will undoubtedly ring at a most inopportune time.

I'm a life member, and thankfully, this hasn't happend except three or four times; I can't remember the last time they called....

No. I am an endowment member and proud of it. I can say "no thanks" and hang up. I can send money a couple times a year. No one else is working harder to protect your 2a rights. I also belong to Isra, three sportsmen's clubs and lobby for our rights.
What do you actively do?

Much of that isn't realistically going to happen and wasting political capital on it is counterproductive.

Who actually thinks NFA could be repealed in total? No one. Modified, possibly. Repealed, pipedream.

Repeal the GCA, simply not gonna happen. Modified, possibly.

Brady bill repealed, not happening. Modified, possibly.

Lautenberg? That's a real possibility.

Good points. The GCA68 and Brady are facts of life. No reason for the NRA to waste time and political capital on those issues. But I agree, reversing Lautenberg is something that MIGHT have a future and I'd sure like to see that happen. But in the present climate I don't think it's realistically going to happen.

Some politicians have promised to roll back some gun control. However, after they were elected to congress the promise was promptly forgotten. In 1996 the US house did vote to overturn the GCA but it was dead in the water.

Very few congressmen/women will sponser legislation to repeal the NFA or the GCA 1968. Any congressman who does so will immediately become a lightning rod.

I've been a member now for about 4-5 years. I get a few emails here and there but no calls. I find it a little annoying that they try to get you to renew way too early every year but who doesn't? Overall, I'd say they really haven't pestered me that much.

I'm a Patron Member, and never ever get a call.

My relationship with the NRA is easy: I throw out all of their mail unopened save for American Rifleman. They do not lobby with their funds, the NRA-ILA does. So there's nothing that they send me that is of interest to me. I wish I could tell them to save their mailing costs, but there does not seem to be that option.

I *do* open and read mail from and contribute to the NRA-ILA (as well as to the SAF). But the core NRA? My Patron Membership is enough, and they seem to know it. Never been bothered by them.
