Proficiency With BBQ Guns

BBQ guns, Church guns, 4th of July guns.........pretty much the same, just different name, different location. Back in the day, not many folks had the expendable income we do today. Thus they didn't have guns they didn't shoot or have a purpose for. Today many folks have guns they don't shoot or rarely shoot and keep 'em just 'cause they can. Not just their fancy guns either. I doubt anyone here will admit to not being proficient with any gun they own, much less their favorite OC.

In many places, having a fancy OC gun was moot because of the laws and/or the local mindset against it. around here, I remember folks OCing for as long as I can remember( more than half a century or so). We called them(and still do) "cabin guns" 'cause so many folks had/have a "cabin" on their back 40 or by a body of water someplace, and it is customary to take and carry a handgun with you while you are there. Since CWC was illegal here till 2011, the only way to carry it, legally, even on private property, was Open.

Then there's "Bling" guns............

So most folks that carry a "BBQ gun" to a special occasion I'm guessing don't regularly carry that particular gun.

I carry different firearms with different types of clothes. Never carried a “just for looking at” gun though.

If there’s shooting at B-B-Q’s I going to I bring one of my “game” guns or a couple shotguns if we are shooting clays.

It is legal where I live to open carry but I very rarely do, except when hunting.
I have never thought of showing off a gun in a typical social setting and don't carry anything I am not proficient with.

I've learned a lot from reading this thread!
I haven't been to a large BBQ social since college 40 years ago and no guns were apparent then. Now, if I'm cooking at the grill, its a .22 or my old model 66 with wadcutters just for plinking between turning and basting.

I grew up in the south and, except for a temporary excursion northward for my higher education, have lived here all my life.

I have never once been to a BBQ where people are ostentatiously OC'ing much of anything, much less engraved 6-shooters. This must be a western thing only. If I had a BBQ (and I frequently do) and greeted guests at the gate or the smoker while wearing a tooled-leather rig with an ivory-handled SAA, people would wonder why I forgot to put "costume party" on my invitations.

Of course, we don't wear bolo ties non-ironically here, neither.

In woodworking, you can buy hand planes that are works of art (and priced accordingly). Stanley has re-introduced the “sweetheart” family of planes that mimic the antique ones from back in the day.

A gorgeous, high grade hand plane can be a joy to use, if properly sharpened and set up correctly. And they quite often do beautiful work if used correctly.

No reason why “purty” guns shouldn’t be the same way, if that’s what the owner wants. They are still tools, after all, and were made to use.

Got a coupla 45s and coupla 55s, all with full set of cutters and original wooden boxes. I'd guess they would be considered Bar-B-Que hand planes.....:D

I'll never understand the attitude that good looking guns can't possibly be real "working guns". BBQ/Court guns were/are traditionally carried by men that know how to use them. I carry 1911s and every one of them is built for work but that and BBQ looks are not mutually exclusive. My EDC piece is pretty subdued but I could substitute any other 1911 in my safe for it and wield it just as effectively, and look better doing it.

These are guns that I've carried for special occasions like court, weddings, funerals, etc., sometimes they are carried openly, other times concealed. And, they occasionally get run at IDPA and USPSA matches, as well.

Back in the day a Taxas BBQ was a large social gathering. People would dress their best . A Texas Range would show up in his best clothes, boots and hat. Most often the he had a fancy leather rig with an engraved gun.
Over the years BBQ gun has become a term for a fancy carry gun.
Here are two that fit the bill of a true BBQ gun.

Dang gunny, are those yours? You sure do have some nice things! Sure wouldn't pass up a bbq at your place:)

WC,
Nicely executed 1911s you have there Sir.

2 questions please. Who did the work on the first pistol and who was the holster maker(s) for your court rigs?

Thanks!

Thanks. That pistol is a Colt 1991A1 Compact that Clark's did their Meltdown package on about 20 years ago. I had a local 'smith, Dietrich Gunsmithy, refinish in high polished blue and do a few other things about 6 years ago. Black Hills Leather made the belt and mag pouch and the two different holsters.

I thought that was a Clark Meltdown. I wanted one when they first came out, but I was broke back then.:(

The closest that I have to a BBQ gun is an old Police Service Six that I swapped the barrel out on. One day I need to spend an evening with Mother's and give her a shine.
