Proposed re-naming for the 10 mm Auto...a marketing effort to revive the cartridge...

OK...as an aside for a moment...

Who here thinks that if we DID introduce a "new" cartridge that was *gasp* one centimeter in diameter *gasp* that we would have breathless press releases from the VPC and the Brady Bunch attacking the new "weapons of mass destruction" being released by The Gunmakers onto the streets of America?

I know I do. ;)

Anyway...back to your regularly scheduled debate.

Mike

George is right, how about more weapon choices, like say, the CZ97BD, Ruger P90, M&P, XD&(M), or the FNP series & H&K USP in 10mm.
I'd buy any of the above no matter if you called the round, full flavored & unfiltered 40, 40 fast-n-furious, 10mm melon masher, whatever, I'll take two!

The Col. Cooper?

The Centimeter is good too.

.40 S&W Special would have more than a little dose of irony.

But, IMHO, 10mm auto is the best name for it. I notice that 9x19mm has never suffered lack of popularity due to its boring name.

how about the 40 a$$kicker. that'll get everyone to buy one. :)

but in all seriousness... you could just call it the 40 sw magnum, or 40 mag for short.

it'd also help if there were more pistols chambered for it.

I feel that 10mm is the origional, and thus it is actually the 40SW that should be redefined as 40Short&Weak.
This should sell more 10mm.

What's In a Name?

Well according to urban legends George Lucas was originally planning to call Star Wars - SPACE WARS. So yeah a name is a big deal.

But I don't think there is anything wrong with 10mm. Although the
10 Col. Cooper would be a more deserved name.

or the 10 auto blaster! :neener:

Seriously though if I can add the 10mm to my list of wants I keep hoping sig will put out even a limited run of 220's in 10 I'd be satisfied.

How about the 10mm whoopass? I think anti-gun politicians might choke and die on it if we named it that.

And of course you have to require only whoopass to be stamped around the primer.

The "Pink Fuzzy Bunny" round???
(c'mon, Larry Correia and company had it right, who can possibly look serious trying to ban something like the "Pink fuzzy Bunny" round?!?)

I'd just leave the name as is , I really wish S&W would produce the M&P chambered for the 10MM Norma Auto round . I don't mind owning a 'niche' round .

Giving it a new name isn't going to do squat to help popularize the round.

It isn't a very popular round because the recoil, barrel rise, muzzle blast and muzzle flash of the weapon are just too much for the vast majority of shooters.

Most handguns purchased these days are for personal defense (PD), and the above shortcomings make it a less than ideal PD choice for most people.

Yet lightweight, short barreled .357 magnum revolvers are selling like hotcakes. ;)

No, actually they're not. Also, the significant majority of people who own .357's, shoot .38 Special most of the time.

According to gun industry sales figures, semi-automatics are outselling revolvers by 3 or 4 to one. And many of the revolvers sold are .38's and .22's. So .357's aren't exactly taking the market by storm.

My local dealer is one of the largest in the Southeast, and he told me he doesn't sell enough .357's to keep him in business for a week.

The last concealed carry course at my range had 45 attendees, and only three of them were packing .357's.

One of the old-timers at my range (who's been shooting since at least the 1960's) told me he recently sold his .357 snubbie, because the recoil was just too unpleasant.

Massad Ayoob once canceled a range test on one of the "airweight" style .357 snubs, because the recoil was so heavy he was concerned it might cause permanent nerve damage to his shooting hand/wrist.
