I've heard nothing but good things about the 3 inch gp100. And I WANT one.... I think. The problem is, I've never seen one in person since the local shops don't stock it and it doesn't photograph as well as its 4-inch big brother. I'm getting worried that it might be an ugly gun. That short barrel against the heavy frame with those tiny factory grips gives it an unbalanced disproportionate look. So show me your 3 inch gp100. Prove to me it's actually a good looking gun. Please. And thank you.

All the way to the right on this picture. Some other revolvers to compare it to.

I like 3 inch revolvers and the grips on the Ruger fit me perfectly. I personally think it is the most balanced of all the GPs.

The GP-100 has its own lines, and they've got a certain elegance. I'd rather see different grips, though. Those rubber-over-wood things are a bit slick in my hands, and they just look a bit tacky.

Stick some nice all-wood grips on, and we're talking :)

Nice Bulldog, but again, it's those little grips. I wonder how it would look with the full size factory grips.

Amadeus, you raise an interesting point. When Ruger was trimming its line a couple of years ago, I bought a stainless 3" GP which came new from the factory with the full size grip, oddly enough. It looked OK. I prefer the smaller grip on those guns so I swapped it out, but either grip will fit. I prefer the larger grip on the adjustable versions.

I personally like the appearance of the small grip on the 3-incher just fine and think that it looks aesthetically balanced.

But if it's the full-sized grip you like, I think there are some pics floating around with that combo. They do swap out easily if you've got a full sized grip laying around.

The small grip just fits the hand so perfectly for me as it is, and apparently for many others who feel the same. I don't hear many comments about how S&W's (insert variant of factory grip here) fits the hand so perfectly, but I do hear it a lot about Ruger's short GP100 grip.

I like both factory grips just fine. I keep the larger size on my adjustable-sight GP100s, and the smaller size on my fixed-sight 4" GP100. This thread is very timely for me; I looked at a couple of 3" GP100s earlier today, and just might take some trading stock back with me tomorrow afternoon. (Sunday)

here are some pictures of my 3" GP100 with some Ruger wood grips which are an exact duplicate of the Ruger GP100 Rubber grips with wood inserts. These grips were made by Lett grips for the Ruger Super Redhawk sometime in the 1980's!:

Lett is out of business, huh? Oh. So it's the factory grips then. The full sized grips would look proportionate on the gun I suppose.

Hey, here's a question. Does the small grip frame gp100 need it's own sized grips, or will grips made for the SP101 fit the frame?

I personally am a huge fan of 3" revolvers. Love the look, and feel. Especially Ruger. there's a certain unmistakable rugged beauty to them.

Yes, it's ugly. After a day or two, you convince yourself it's not that bad. After a week you actually like it. I had to special order mine. I like 3 inch barreled revolvers.

Here are the two grips for the GP100:

Grip, 1 Piece Rubber with Wood Inserts T21000-CS GP100 - All Adjustable Sight Models 23.75
Grip, 1 Piece Rubber with Wood Inserts T21010-CS GP100 - All Fixed Sight Models 23.75

And here are grips for the SP101:

Grip with Plastic Inserts W21000 All SP101 Models 16.50
(Disassembly Pin & Screw Included)

19-3Ben,the grips are different, as the SP101 and GP100 have different grip frames, but the small GP100 grips and the SP101 grips share the same factory panel inserts.

I traded a Colt Lawman Mk III today to put a 3" GP100 on lay-awake, er, I mean layaway. The cool thing is that it has adjustable sights! :)

Apparently there was a limited run of those for someone fairly recently. I saw my first one in a local gunshop just a couple months ago. It's gone, before someone asks.

3 inch barrel GP100 ugly? Goodness...I started with the Ruger Platform because it was a beauty! Um...that and very robust too.

ALL grips for ALL models of SuperRedHawk fit ALL GP100s. Regardless of barrel length of any of the guns - they all have the same "stub" underneath.

Hey Dawg, a couple of questions.

First off, can you shoot without the moon clips and get reliable ignition? How are the moon clips when loading? I shoot a 45 ACP Revolver and have no problems with the moon clips, but I think the shorter cartridge of the 45 ACP plays a big part in that for reloading quickly. What is your opinion?

Second, What front sight do you have on that beauty? Is it the "Stock" Front Sight?

BikerRN: Yes, one can shoot without the moon clips. The moon clips are so much easier, however, and just drop right in the slightly recessed cylinder walls. Marc also ships out two tools: a mooner and de-mooner pliers at an additional cost of about 170 bucks or so. The front sight is the stock fixed sight...which works very well.

3" adjustable sighted GP-100

So the story goes from the Ruger Forum the 3" adj. sighted GP's were made for some police agency in the Carolinas some time back so perhaps they are turning up now if being replaced. There was a picture of one over at the Ruger Forum a couple of years ago (2004) but the search function does not work.
