PT1911 Question

For those of you who own the Taurus PT1911, have you thought about, or actually replaced the full length guide rod? (FLGR from here on.)

The reason I ask, I've looked at it. I like it, except for the 2 dot sight system, but I think I can learn to like that. But I really don't like the FLGR on any 1911. I currently have a Para-Ord P14.45, which has a FLGR, and if I don't sell it (something I'm thinking about) I intend to replace the FLGR with the "standard" type 1911 spring guide rod.

Opinions, anyone?

Well, Al, I see this as more of a question regarding the usefulness or benefits of the FLGR and not necessarily specific to the PT-1911.

I don't have the PT-1911 (yet, may pick one up eventually) but I have replaced FLGRs on a couple of my 5" 1911s, an SA Loaded and a Kimber TLE. The shorter, GI-length guide rods make field-stripping and reassembly a trifle easier and don't seem to create any degrading of accuracy or functioning. Just my experience.

I guess it is more directed at FLGRs. Still, I was curious if it was possible to replace the FLGR on a PT1911.

I've never seen the usefulness of a FLGR, but haven't become annoyed enough with it to have spent dollars to replace it, as yet. My springer with the standard system works. My taurus, with the FLGR also works, just looks goofy.

First thing you need to do is replace the plastic hammer with a steel hammer and the MIM internal parts with steel internal parts. I can't suggest the Cylinder & Slide TacIII lockwork enough.

After that you can take out the FLGR and throw it away. Replace with an Ed Brown stubby w/spring cap.

GreenFurniture, are you a troll? You keep saying it has a plastic hammer, but in another thread where you posted, it was clearly established that the hammer is not plastic?

Just an FYI, Gun Tests Magazine ran the PT1911, as well as a few others, and gave it a "Don't buy" recommendation.

I have one and totally agree with the review. The guys that paid 1,000 and up for their 1911's are just upset...

FWIW, the Heinie 2-dot system has really impressed me. Thought that would be something I would have replaced when I bought the PT 1911, but now I seem to prefer it. Seems faster that the 30dot sights I'm used to.
