I am gonna pick up another .308 rifle and I want a PTR. The only question in my mind is whether to get the

or the

With the 18" barrel you get the extra barrel length. I hear that you really should not go lower than 18" with 7.62 NATO.

With the 16" you get a little better balance on an already (front)heavy rifle. It is also smaller and thus eaiser to manuver in an urban enviroment. I would like this gun to be useable as a SHTF gun incase of a vampire attack or some other similar incident.

I plan to use this as my anti-zombie/werewolf rifle so I really only need to be able to reach out 2-300 yards on a good day and 100 the rest of the time.

Any advice or suggestions?

With the 18" version you can order up the wide front hand guard w/ bipod from RTG or one of the other HK parts outfits which will make it look like a proper HK91 and will help with the longer shooting. The wide front hand guard can be had for the 16" version but they seem to be a lot harder to find and more expensive.

.308 Win isn't a magnum cartridge, any extra barrel length (even just two more inches) will help you out as far as velocity and a longer sight radius goes.

Where did you hear that?

You lose about 30fps per inch between 16 and 22 on your average .308 rifle if I remember right.

I have the 16" model and it performs perfectly fine out to 300 yards. Haven't been to a range with more room than that so beyond there I dunno.

That's why I bought the 18" model. Wonderful shooter to have , but a nightmare if you're a reloader. The roller locks kind of flower the brass so you can't reload them. Go with the longer barrel, the ability to shoot tight shot groups is excellent. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my PTR.:D

If you're gonna go .308, go all the way.

No respectable battle rifle has a carbine length barrel. That is what you AR15 is for.

Def. get the 18". If I had the extra dinero, I would pick up a 16".
As an aside, the PTR 91 is the best rifle I have ever owned; hands down no contest. It kicks rear in every department. You won't be disappointed.

About a year ago I asked about barrel lenghts for 7.62 NATO. I was actually about to buy a PTR 91 then as well, but something came up. Now that my November quarterly bonus and Christmas bonus are about to arrive and with the political climate the way it is, I'm not going to hesitate.

Get the 18" so you can use all the HK accessories.
Excellent Point. That HK wide "shoulder thing that goes up" with the bipod (that I will actually use) attached is in my toolbox. Its in the bottom drawer with 108 G3 magazines. :p

This is awesome. I'm gonna take pictures do a write up and everything.

Get a Port Buffer, best 40 bucks you will ever spend on a HK91 accessory.

Almost 100% of the brass I pick up from shooting my 91's are reloadable with a port buffer on the rifle.

+1 on the 18", and +1 on the port buffer. Robert RTG Parts has them for something like $50. Will make your brass readily reloadable, if you can find it!:what:

No doubt my PTR is my favorite rifle. It has taken a few years to get it to where I really like it, but as it is now, it is just great.

PTR-91KF handguard length

Does anyone know what the length of the PTR-91KF handguard is? I was wondering if the HK G3K handguard (11.5") would fit. The HK51 handguard looks way too short.

Thanks in advance.

Oh - I voted for the 18" but still want a 16" if the G3K handguard will fit.

I like the balance and handiness of a 16" bbl, loss of velocity has never concerned me in the least. The bullet will still be traveling fast enough to do its job.

There is nothing non-proprietary or non-HK about the 16" gun. It just uses the front end from an HK93 which is the same as the G3K.

Now, if you want to debate about which stuff is cheaper or more readily available, have at it.
