I was flipping through the Big 5 catalog this weekend, and they had a sale announcement for a Romanian PAR-3...looked kind of like an AK/SKS, but it had a 10-round magazine, and was pump action.

I've never seen anything like it, and did a quick search on here but couldn't find anything.

I hardly need a pump-action .223, but with a listed price of $259...I am intriqued.

Anyone have any experience?

The slide is conected directly to the gas piston. It is more relaible because you are the one pushing the piston back not the gas. We have the 7.62x39 version for sale at my local Big5 this week.

I'm still in shock that Big5 would sell an AK variant!!!

Anteater, is it a variant or does it just look like an AK? I ask because if it isn't a variant we could have something like that up here in canada :)

Isn't this one of those california/new york things?

Yeah, the guy at Big 5 told me since they are based in California that they order them special and rather than order with and without the pump, they just send those to all the stores.

I had one in 762x39. It was just ok. Sometimes shells would get stuck in the chamber. I would have to drop the mag, hold the pump and hit the butt of the rifle on my shooting carpet to get the shell to eject. A gas system works much better in my opinion. Mark

There's also the Remington 7615, if ya want a pump action .223. At least it uses standard AR mags.

And it's accurate.

Leave the frankenAKs to the poor Californians.

PAR's been out for a while. (ban era)

they are AK's without the gas system ( barrels not drilled for port i believe) the pump arm runs down the gas tube to the carrier

same bolt carrier, rotating bolt design

Bitchin! Looks like and AK (kinda) costs less, ammo is cheaper, and it probably wont jam

why, do AK's jam? iv never experienced it. (tongue in cheek)

Last i knew Big 5 carried more traditional AK's in the Non CA stores aswell as these.

I wonder how difficult it would be to convert it to a regular semi-auto?

How is the fire control group in these set up?

They require a bit of machine knowledge to do so. The gas port in the barrel needs to be drilled. Some parts are unusable in a semi auto rifle. The FCG is the same as any other semi auto Kalashnikov.

YES...I just had an epiphany. I'm going to buy a pump-action ASSAULT RIFLE, then convert it into semi-auto, then...FILE DOWN THE FIRING PIN TO MAKE IT FULL AUTO! BWAHAHAHAHA! I'll be unstoppable!

:neener:

(jk, if that were even possible)

So it should be doable by someone with a mill, lathe, and drill press at home and who has previously built an AK from a demiled kit? :D

You'd pretty much just need to fit it with a regular gas piston, gas block, handguard retainer, gas tube, and drill the gas port?

I was curious if they'd build these with a FCG more like the FA version so they could be slam-fired, but it's definitely just as well that they're not.

I have had a couple of these for several years. I got mine from Century;
it came with 5 of the 10 round magazines and a sling for 150.
It is accurate; and since I installed one of the Romanian side folding
metal stocks; it is short and handy. I installed a top cover with a
weaver rail and mounted a red dot sight. This is a good truck gun.

Oh teh noes! Hide teh childs!
That thing is fugly. But, it'd be worth having just to scare the hoplophobes.

Not pretty

Hey, I never said it was pretty. It was the price and just general 'what do we have here' factor that caught my attention.

I might go try to handle one...I have T-rex type arms, so I am not sure how a pump gun would fit me anyway's. I doubt I would be as quick with it as I am with my Marlin .357...
