I saw in the news this morning about a gun battle between Jersey City police and two armed robbery suspects. The mayor mentioned that one of the suspects had "a shotgun, not a regular shotgun, some type of a automatic shotgun." I'm assuming that the shotgun was a run-of-the-mill semiauto. However, it was described as not being "regular" so could it have possibly been some type of fully-auto shotgun?

The police chief stated, "This individual came fully ready to go to war with us. This is not a normal shotgun. This is not a street weapon. This is one that's meant to hunt nothing other than men."

I'm assuming that the shotgun was a run-of-the-mill semiauto, that instead of having a camo paint job, was all black and maybe had some scary looking accessories. However, it was described as not being "regular" or "normal" so could it have possibly been some type of fully-auto shotgun?

Here's the link to the story: http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/local_news/new_jersey/090716_police_officer_shot_in_wild_shootout_in_jersey_city

You need to watch the videos with the actual statements, rather than just the written story.

Edit: I watched further into the video where the police chief stated that the weapon was a "pump shotgun"!!! The reason it was such an abnormal weapon: It had a retractable stock and a strap on it to hold extra shells!!! The chief admitted it wasn't an illegal weapon. Cudos to the reporters for calling them out on their misrepresentations.

What is going on here???

Standard errors in reporting and in characterization by folks speaking on camera.

Any shotgun that we might call a "defensive shotgun" might be dramatically spoken about this way by someone on camera interested in heightening the drama of a situation. So they could be talking about anything from an 18" Remington 870 Express with a side saddle and a sling for shells to a Siaga to an antique Atchison.

The same police chief later states in the briefing that he is trying to be very careful not to give any misinformation to the reporters. I love the irony.

Probably an auto-loading shotgun. Around here we use pumps or automatics.
No one calls them semi-automatics.

It would be like calling a a Browning Auto 5 a Browning Semi-Auto 5.

By the way, I think this is the first time I can ever remember where knowledgable reporters called out a misrepresentation/exaggeration of a weapon used in a shooting.

Most of the initial news stories that I saw on this incident described the weapon as an automatic firearm. However, almost all have now been revised (including the story I linked to originally) to accurately reflect that a pump shogun was used.

OMG My mossberg is only meant for people! Good thing i know its useless for clay pigeons now. That must be why i kept missing them was because the shotgun im using is only meant for people.

Why do I think that guy doens't belong to the NRA? Anytime someone hates guns an thinks they all should be banned they will give wrong info. an try an make them into evil guns, my Mossberg .12 ga. has become an Implement of Destruction, only to kill humans.
I hope the deer feel safer now.

lol...you guys are cracking me up right now....

Funny.....although the shotgun I carry in my cruiser really is inteded for human targets, 99.9% of the time I'm just having to shoot injured moose with it. Go figure.

Should I forward that to the Chief??

By the way....my shotgun really IS and automatic shotgun; I automatically grab it from my side when I need it......

One way to combat this misinformation whether its on purpose or just ignorance is to contact papers and news outlets reporting such incidents along with the po po spokesperson and or any politcal official that may be involved and correct them.

Offer them education on the proper terminology and use of firearms.

Many years ago our local 2nd amendment group had a discussion on this problem so now many of our members call everytime there is misinformation presented.

At first the news outlets resisted but after contacting their advertisers they fell in line.

We also left members numbers with the police dept so if they were'nt sure of proper firearm terminology they would be welcome to call. They quickly thought before speaking after that.

When you consider 6 pellets of 00 buck in a shotgun capable of emptying 5 round magazine in less than a minute translate to at least a cyclic rate of +30, it was only a matter of time for someone to make it a media frenzy.

I can't wait for the belt feed semi auto black shotguns of death to come out!
:D

They say "meant for nothing besides men" like its a bad thing. Yes, some weapons are designed for use as weapons. Get over it. There is no "sporting" clause in the Constitution.

There is nothing better than one of these "man slayers" for guarding your castle. The fact remains that sometimes, dirty jobs must be done. Not all people deserve to be protected by the law.

You would be wasting your time. These "reports" are coming from a socialist cesspool called Jersey. They are not trying to report the facts. They are however trying to formulate a public opinion... a public opinion that hates people who own guns. They don't care if you are a criminal or not. They cannot ban guns legally so they are using back door methods like the media to make us look bad. Perhaps a staging event to future bans.

You left out the word "hunting," which makes the phrase sound even worse.

A gun possessed for defensive purposes is not meant for men, it just so happens that the primary threat to which the gun may be needed is men. If a crazy robot or space alien attacked your house, you'd reach for that same shotgun to defend yourself.

There is definitely a double standard when it comes to guns as between the police and civilians. If a civilian owns a handgun, then that handgun's sole purpose is to kill people. If a police officer owns the exact same handgun, then that handgun's sole purpose is to preserve the peace.
