Purse goes bang, blows its secret
By Heather Ratcliffe
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
01/23/2006

Black sequins rained down in the Dairy Queen after the explosion.

Some thought a car had backfired in the parking lot. But that wouldn't explain the sequins, or the smoke, or the smell of gunpowder in the south St. Louis County restaurant.

Then everyone's attention turned to a woman in line - the one with a shredded sequined purse on the tile floor near her feet.

"She picked up her purse like it was some kind of disease," explained Shelley White, the store manager on duty.

"I ain't got no gun," was the only thing the stranger told the crowd in the restaurant before gathering her purse and teenage daughter from a nearby booth and running out of the place about 1 p.m. Friday.

But she did have a gun, investigators said, apparently a low-quality one that discharged by accident when she dropped her purse.

She had a secret too, one that she might have kept had White not rushed to the window and called out the license number for a customer to jot down. The fleeing woman was an off-duty St. Louis police officer.

The bullet blew a hole in a window and came to a safe landing in front of a doorway. A fragment struck a van outside. But no one was injured.

"I don't know how that bullet didn't kill anyone," said White, whose family owns the franchise. "I looked at the people outside, and they were just standing there with their mouths hanging open."

St. Louis County police tracked down the city officer, who they said first denied even being at the restaurant, in the 4300 block of Telegraph Road. Then she told police that she had fled because she thought she was under fire. Finally she confessed to the accident, police said.

The officer, whose name was not released pending consideration of charges against her, eventually told police that she had thrown the weapon out her car window along Interstate 255 because she was afraid she was going to be in trouble.

County officers spent hours scouring the area along the westbound lanes in the dark and rain Friday, looking for the weapon; they never found it.

The woman resigned from the force Friday after the St. Louis police internal affairs unit opened an investigation. She had been on the department for three years.

Said White, "I just can't believe she's a police officer."
One bad po po bites the dust. St.L Police have an affirmative action program. So do I. Mine has five magazines...:neener:

Hmmm. First she has an AD. Then she lies about it. Then she ditches the gun so a kid or criminal can find it. Then she lies about it again - repeatedly. And this woman was a cop. Please, tell me again about how safe we are with the police protecting us.

Accidental purse discharges. No doubt some gun shoppe commando told her that off body carry is . . . [wait for it] . . . all you need.:D

Happened to NY Yankees manager Billy Martin in a bar in Indianapolis. Woman carrying one of those awful California Z Guns, a derringer, IIRC, set her purse down *Blam*. Bullet missed Billy by a foot. (Just a bit outside):D

"I don't know how that bullet didn't kill anyone," said White, whose family owns the franchise.
Maybe because it didn't hit anyone? Sheeple seem to believe that when a gun goes "bang," everybody in the area dies. Children first. That's how it works on TV

while I am glad no was hurt, that is the funniest thing I've heard in a while. at least since lawdog last updated his story. (where is part three?) on the other hand, how would you react if your carry piece were to have a AD while you were in public. granted us responsible owners tend to have good quality firearms that are reliable, so that really isn't an issue.

The real shame here is...

What would happen if that happened to you or someone you know? Answer: Immediate arrest and prosecution. But, because she was a cop, they sat around deciding what to do. Maybe not all cops are this stupid or lie as much, but they seem to cover for those who do. Am I the only one who sees this as the real problem? If the police as a whole wouldn't tolerate this, such misfits would never be a problem to begin with, they'd be weeded out early instead of being protected by the "thin blue line". :barf:

I don't know about the thin blue line part, but I am sure if that were me, my guns would have all been confiscated by now and my right to carry would be revoked.

Oh, no, a serf rebellion on THR!:D

I'll have you know she was the only person professional enough to carry a gun in Saint Louis.:D

I was waiting for that comment. Can't have a thread about LE without that quote surfacing can we? :banghead:

Tex, just having fun on the Errornet.:D Come on, RastaNarc was a huge joke, even my cop friends laugh at it.:D

However, maybe I can say that because I'm EX-LE.:)

So I guess that makes you the only one on THR professional enough to use that quote? :D

Tex

ps- Thanks for your service.

One bad apple is no reason to throw out the whole barrel...

You're right, and that was never my intent. I worked very closely with LEOs for many years and I always had a great relationship with most of the officers I met.

Your all missing it !!!

Why was this woman hired???

Because she was a competent law enforcement profesional with a proven track record?

Because she had a long record for integrity in the workplace with multiple solid references?

No...all the usual checks and balances, all the standards were tossed out the window for ONE REASON!!! HER GENDER!!!

What this story is all about shipmates is the inevitable fruit of affirmative action.........

Equality means an level playing field for everyone! No favors, no handouts, no special treatment!!

Lower the standards to get more of one type of person over the bar, in the name of diversity, and you get just that....LOWERED STANDARDS!!

That's the story behind the story.

So call me a bigot because I believe EVERYONE should be treated fairly based upon their abilities.

Exactly right. Resigning her job is probably all that will happen to her; in my case, it would be reckless endgangerment, fleeing the scene to avoid prosecution, obstruction of justice (tampering with evidence), and lying to a police officer . . . this last alone is enough to go to jail, just ask Martha Stewart.
But, because she was a cop, they sat around deciding what to do. Maybe not all cops are this stupid or lie as much, but they seem to cover for those who do. Am I the only one who sees this as the real problem?
No, you're not alone.
If the police as a whole wouldn't tolerate this, such misfits would never be a problem to begin with, they'd be weeded out early instead of being protected by the "thin blue line".
But such intolerance would be contrary to the dictates of departmental diversity, and as such would draw the ire of both administrators and courts.

So call me a bigot because I believe EVERYONE should be treated fairly based upon their abilities.
No, you're a bigot because you assume that she was only hired because of her sex -- and not because up until she did an incredibly stupid thing and lied about it, she looked like a good hire.

Your conclusion isn't bigoted. You just started from the wrong place.
