Putting my M48A back to right

About 2 years ago, I ventured away from my Mosin buying and purchased a Yugo M48A. It was $99 and one of those impulse buying things, but when I got her cleaned up it turned out she had all matching numbers and a really nice piece of dark wood to boot. I found out pretty quickly that even with the mauser sights that I hate, and surplus ammo, I could do 2MOA all day long. I should have been happy with that, but I started thinking and, as usual when I start thinking, things went wrong. I started wondering what kind of shooting I could do with better sights, or better yet, with a scope. Then I found a B-Square mount on Ebay with a 4X scope attached for $60. Seemed like a good idea at the time. And maybe at first it was. 1.5 inches was the norm and from time to time I would get a batch of good surplus ammo and I was so close to 1MOA I could taste it. But everytime I looked at her something wasn't right. It was like having a really great girlfriend, the kind that is kind, beautiful, smart, loves your mother, and is a little frisky, but she has a conjoined dead fetus on her shoulder. No matter what you do, there's that dead fetus looking you in the face. So this morning I got out the tool kit and removed the dead...I mean, the scope mount, and set things right again. I can be happy with 2 inch groups. Hey, I just may get used to the mauser sights some day. But either way, she sure looks better now.

There is a cheap solution to your problem, a company makes a rear peep sight for these and other Mauser rifles as well as some other guns. The peep sight is cheap and well made and it doesn't ruin the looks or handeling ability of the Mauser.

I haven't tried them myself but I've been tempted. All I've read about them has been positive.

I recently installed a Mojo front and rear peep sight on my Yugo M48. MidwayUSA charged about $ 55. Install took about two hours, one usually has to file a little on the front sight male dovetail, not the dovetail mount on the barrel. Also, at the same time I bought 100 Remington 8mm cases, made up fifty rounds with turned necks and cast bullets with gas checks. Reduced loads at about 2100 fps mv.

Took the M48 out to the range, sighted it in. Big difference from when the rifle had the original military sight. The Mojo sight is adjustable for elevation and windage and the ghost ring front and rear peep makes it a lot easier for old eyes to put rounds into a minute of angle or so at 100 yards. One can reinstall the original sights if desired, the mounts are not changed in any way.

The M48 is a good shooter, I have thought about using it in a highpower match, but I am not sure the Mojo sight would be legal. I could use my Garand, or my 03A1, the 03A1 has the flip up rear sight with the ladder that goes up to 2750 yards. I know I would never ever change anything on that rifle, although I am going to try some cast bullets in the 1903A1 and another 30-06 I have.

Yep, that was what I was talking about, Mojo sights. I have them on my AK but I didn't know it until I saw a thread here about them. The AK came with peep sights and I didn't even know they had a name. They work great and are solid and simple. You don't see them on the gun unless you are looking for them so it doesn't change the original look too much.

I want a set of Mojo sights for my M48A but for some reason, the sights it came with are fine for me right now. I can't stand most V-notch rear sights, my M-44, Turk Mauser and other rifles have them and I can't shoot well with them but the M-48A is a different story, I can really see them clearly for some reason so I am not sure if it is worth it to switch yet.

Those Mojo's might be just what I'm looking for. How much filing did it take to get the front sight to work?

Feanaro, the scope is now dead, but if you want the mount make me an offer. Keep in mind that I have money, what I need is stuff.

How much filing does it take to mount a Mojo front sight?

Well, the entire refit of front and rear sight took a couple of hours. Fitting the front sight was the most difficult part, only because it took about an hour of filing on the sight with a tri corner jeweler file, the file has two safe sides, so one does not file off parts not intended -- File a few strokes, try for a fit, file a few more strokes, etc. One wants the final fit to be a light press fit, where the sight can be tapped into place with a small plastic head hammer. The front sight dovetail is supplied a little oversize to permit hand fitting on individual firearms. The instructions included are pretty good, although one has to be able to use to good effect small hand tools.

Also, one can elect to purchase only the rear ghost ring Mojo, and leave the original front sight as is... Or! one could purchase front and rear Mojo, try the rifle with both the original sight and the Mojo front peep and make a choice based on results! Good results depend on the rifle, the ammunition, the sights, and the shooter. But of course you know this. Have big fun with your toys and your choices, that's what america is all about!
