I'm looking at picking up a Springfield GI in stainless, and would like to add an extended safety, flat mainspring housing, and bob the hammer. I'm pretty much sold on the idea of this package, but before I pony up the dough I was wondering if another gun maker had an offering like this to look at? I want to be as close the the original GI specs as possible so the Milspec is out. I'm only having the mods done for shooting comfort. Thanks for the help!

Bob the hammer?

I under stand this on revolvers and I understand it on 1911s if you are meaning to just take the very end of the spur down. Which do you mean. I would not do a full on bob of a 1911 hammer.

I question why you are unwilling to choose the Mil Spec because it does not conform closely enough to GI specs, yet you want to bob the hammer change the MSH and install an extended safety which will all detract from the look of the GI type 1911. A Mil Spec done with the same mods would pretty much look the same. I understand your preference though since the Mil Spec is a little pricier than the GI.

Im sorry I am not answering your question properly and instead challenging your motives. From what I know, I do not think any company makes a 1911 such as you would like the end result of your GI spec 1911 to be.

Something to think about though is that Rock Island Armory's GI spec 1911 has a flat MSH already installed. If you are set on the Springfield though then this will not be an option and frankly the Springfield is probably a better platform to start tinkering with.

bob the hammer. Do you mean.. put a commander style hammer in? or grind the thumb tang off? It you do not like the tang, get a commander hammer. grinding the tang off would cause you more problems than it's worth.

Personally I'd get the Mil Spec over the GI if you are planning any mods. The GI is for the guy who wants a WWII clone and will leave it alone.

thanks for the responses. yeah, I just meant taking the end off. I suppose a commander hammer would make more sense. I appreciate your time!

I would buy this Colt 1991:
http://www.coltsmfg.com/Catalog/ColtPistols/Colt1991Series.aspx

Then add a Wilson Hammer and Sear to meet your Hammer criteria. I'm assuming you want a modern hammer, not a true "bobbed" hammer.

Then add a Ed Brown Gripsafety, 25lpi mainspring housing (backstrap), and paddle thumb safety. Then Melonite or Hardhat refinish.

Your trying to keep the old school look and sights with proper improved rear controls right? I've seen the above combo. It was awesome. I want to build the above but use the smaller officers Colt 1911 some day.

The Springfield GI or Mil-Spec are both outstanidng guns, but if I recall correctly, the Para GI Expert has the same specs as the GI/Mil-Spec, but comes from the factory with a looped Commander hammer and flat mainspring housing.
