On my 7.62X39 the bolt does not lock into position when closed and the chamber has a cartridge in it. The other day I was carrying it over my shoulder with the sling and the bolt was open and the cartridge was gone. Is this supposed to happen? Thanks

yeah the RAs do not have a locking bolt. I've had it get lifted, but never lost a round.

That is the way roughly 1/2 of all current bolt actions work. Some will lock the bolt down when the rifles safety is in the on position, some won't. Only those with 3 position safeties will lock the bolt down. Prior to the early 1980's Remington's with 2 position safeties locked the bolt down. But they were redesigned so that you didn't have to move the safety to the fire position to unload the chamber.

I did a quick google-review of common factory actions a few months ago on another site, most models do lock the bolt when the safety is engaged, only because there’s about equal thirds of 3 position safety, 2 position which lock, and 2 position which do not lock.

Personally, I’ve never had my bolt open when carried. I’ve snagged it on straps and had the bolt lifted, but never enough to open and eject a live round.

Throw a rubber band around the bolt handle down to the trigger guard if you need to. I’d think it’s overkill, but if it makes you feel better, it’d it’d prevent ejection of a live round.
