I am looking at buying a revolver for my first purchase in '07.
I love the old sytle of revolvers like the Ruger Security Six. It won't be used for SD or anything, basicly keep it in the safe and shoot it every once in a while then pass it on to my son when he is older. Something in .357 probably.
Is Ruger the only company that makes pistols in this style or is there others? Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by "old style", but if you want a classic .357 magnum revolver, you might want to consider some of the Smith & Wesson revolvers. Here are a few .357 magnum S&W revolvers:

In that case, no, Ruger is not the only one that makes them. However, with that said, they are probably the nicest ones that are made but not the only ones.

Also confused here... the Ruger Security Six is a double action, swing-out cylinder revolver very similar to modern production wheelguns.

By old style, do you mean cowboy action, single action guns like the Colt Peacemaker (single action army), Schofield, and Remington New Model Army (1871)? Fixed cylinder, a loading gate that allows for one cartridge at a time to be removed/loaded?

Makers of these guns include Colt (expensive!), Freedom Arms (expensive!!), US Fire Arms(expensive!!), Uberti, Cimarron, Taurus and Ruger. Probably others too, but those are the big ones that come to mind. I'd like to get a Freedom Arms in .357mag and a 5-6" barrel...

If you want authenticity you will want a Colt or USFA. If you want old time looks with modern safety features you can choose from Ruger, Taurus, Uberti, etc.

To assist with searching use the terms "Single-Action Revolver" or "SAA" (for Single-Action Army) or possibly "Peacemaker".

I have a pair of Taurus Gauchos that I use for Cowboy Action Shooting, in .45 Colt, along with a Ruger Vaquero in the same caliber as a back-up gun. All of them have been good guns.

.41Dave,
Where, oh where did you get those grips on that 586?

I have a beautiful 586 currently wearing Hogue monogrips, and they just don't do the gun justice.

Those look absolutely perfect...

.41Dave,
Nice collection of S&W 357 Mags. My first handgun back in the 1970,s was a Model 19. That is the only 357 that I still own and shoot regularly.

I bought the 586 and 2 other guns with the same style grips at my local FFL's shop. Unfortunately, the guns were sold to the shop by the widow of the previous owner, so I have no idea where he got the grips that came on them. After a great deal of searching, my best guess (and that of several other people) is they are very early Hogues that pre-date the "monogrip" design.

Thanks.

They looked "Hogue-ish", but I'd never seen any of that design before.

Sounds like I need to keep haunting the pawn shops and gunshows :) .

Anyone here ever buy a gun just to get the grips? Fess up!

Is this what you mean?

These are Rugers. Both based on the Blackhawk (the bottom one). The top one is an old model Vaquero. Both in 44 mag. Good guns, happy with a diet of gonzo loads.

Now if you want real old, try this:

Colt Police Positive (PoPo as an American serviceman I met in the 70s called them). It is in 38 Smith and Wesson, mild loads only, or you will be picking bits of chamber out of your forehead. Nice little gun though and I know this one's history, makes it even more enjoyable.

You can't go past the Blackhawks for all round revolers.

those Rugers are the style I love. I guess Taurus makes one now too which resembles those and I am a pretty faithful Taurus guy so I might pick one of those up but we'll see.

Old style? This S&W model 10 made about 1969 makes a nice home defence gun. a good one for just fun shooting. and is still a very viable concealed carry gun even if it doesn't have a 15 or more shot capacity.

My first love though, is this Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt caliber but there are some very good other brands single actions out there.

The Security Six mentioned in the original post threw my off, I thought you meant double action revolvers, but I now gather you meant single action "old west" type revolvers. A lot of companies make Colt SAA clones, and Ruger and Freedom Arms(pricey) make modern design single actions. I own 3 single action revolvers, an EMF Colt SAA clone, a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Magnum, and a Ruger Single Six. All three are accurate and great fun to shoot.

I'd go with a Ruger Blackhawk, personally, but with there is a wide range of good choices out there. Buy the one that appeals to you most.
