Question: Semi-auto free-floated barrel harmonics with a non-contacting gas block?

    Seems to me that a large factor in having an accurate semi-auto gun is having consistent barrel harmonics. A semi-auto with a gas block mounted to the barrel would seem to disrupt the harmonics of the barrel.

    Therefore, I have two questions.

    Is the gas block on a very accurate semi-auto mounted at a vibrational nodal point of the rifle barrel?

    Would "floating" the gas block around the barrel decrease variability in barrel harmonics and thus increase accuracy? I was thinking something like a semi-open chamber around the barrel that didn't touch it but still generated enough pressure to run the gas system. I think with this idea you could have a very accurate piston system rifle.

    if you had a floating gas block, odds are it woulnt create enough preesure to opperate to action. If you are looking for something really accurate, just get an AR. I've seen some that do 1/2MOA. If you need something more accurate than that, tell me when you find it.

    And that's the other part of my question. I read somewhere that a cantilevered barrel has about a 1.1kHz primary mode resonance and a 3.2kHz 3rd harmonic. If we say that the barrel resonates primarily in the 3rd harmonic, then where the gas block is puts it right on the node (zero movement point) of the barrel and it doesn't matter that it's fixed to the barrel.
