Quick silencer question

In a pistol it generally increases velocity as it is essentially making it a longer barrel. I am not sure if it would in a rifle.

From surefire's website...
Suppressors only extend the length of the barrel approximately 3" to 4" and with advanced designs like the new SureFire M4FA, the bullet's velocity is actually increased, improving the terminal ballistics...

My understanding is it only increases velocity a small amount, not as much as if the barrel was actually that much longer.

I'd be more concerned about:

"it also had the least amount of POI change"

POI...Point of Impact!!!!

from a conversation on 'that' site about your subject...

you should have your cmptr checked....

Also from guns magazine...
True or false: Adding a silencer to a rifle increases the muzzle velocity. Again, the answer is true. In another demonstration, two 10-shot strings were fired over an Oehler 35P chronograph, with and without averaged 32 fps higher with the silencer than without.

Like I said, not much of an increase, they chronographed 32fps higher on average.

I don't know about velocity but I found out a number of things shooting a couple of LEO issued .308's not too long ago.
They felt a lot like shooting a .22lr on steroids. We unscrewed about a 15" Suppressor and screwed on the flash arrestor and it felt a lot more like a .308, but not quite. As far as accuracy there was little or no difference at 300yds, but these were not off-the-shelf .308's, They were custom made very expensive and heavy as hell. We were doing button holes on 1" diamonds using Rem. match 168 gr match ammo. and the scopes were the one you could see ticks crawling on the targets from 300yds. (Didn't need spotting scopes). Each rifle had a 2" thick butt pad and compared to my AR10B I could (and offered) shoot those rifles all day and not get tired.
Forgot to mention, they were custom made Remmingtons.

Depends - Free Bore Boost caused by a suppressor does exist, and is caused by the design of some cans which keep pressure on bullet while it goes thru the baffles - not all design's exhibit this - some designs have enough efficency to cause the air column in front of the bullet to be held by the can and cause a braking effect. So without particulars / experience you can't get a "correct" answer.

Freebore boost generally only occurs with centerfire rifle cans. Cans with wipes (old technology) do reduce velocity.
