Quiet airgun recommendations

How much do you want to spend?

I've shot a lot of critters in my back yard. I've spoken to both neighboring adults and kids to get their thoughts on the noise I make as I perform this task. I shoot from inside my laundry room with roughly 10 inches of barrel out the window.

The break barrel guns are loud (Benjamin NP1, NP2, Crossman TR77). Everyone can hear them. When I shoot out of the back 1st floor window, kids on the front porch of my 2 story house say that when I shoot it sounds like someone dropping a metal rake. If I shoot at one squirrel, every other squirrel in the area runs away.

Sorry, quality BREAK BARRELS ARE NOT LOUD!
Yes, break barrels especially the Big Box Store Crosmans etc. are loud. Good quality Air Rifles are so nicely tuned they have very little noise. I understand that you might not have the budget but as you move up or stay in the hobby, you will eventually get one. I own some very nicely custom tuned English and German Airguns. However once again the Walther LGV is extremely quiet right out of the box. You neighbor will not hear this gun. As you can see from this review it is about 78 DB which is amazingly quiet. I have done much testing of DB rating over the years with Airguns. Nothing real scientific, but with meters and recording.
If you can ever get to the point that you can afford a Walther, buy it. The quality of metal, the tolerances, are noticed right away even from a armature. When it locks up the barrel, it is SOLID as a bank vault. Here is yet another review. One quote you hear many times from air gun enthusiast is "This is the finest gun I have shot"

The Marauder rifle in .22 with heavy pellets (sub-sonic) is very, very quiet. So much so that it's pretty much inaudible unless your cheek is against the stock where you then hear the faint 'ping' of the hammer striking the valve. The pellet hitting the target is much, much louder than the delivery. Marauder pistol is a lot louder...and far from what I'd call silent though still well below a 22lr standard velocity report from a long barrelled rifle. Key thing is to keep the pellets sub-sonic or they 'crack' then the internal shroud & baffles quiets the report just fine...especially on the rifle.

here is the link for TKO shrouds. You can get a inexpensive nicely tuned rifle from Mike at flying dragons. Here are shrouds to fit a number of rifles. I have one on my Walther 880 and my Crosman 2250 mentioned in post above. They are totally quiet, The only noise you will hear is the hammer spring and the pellet hitting the target.

The gamos are the quietest i have shot, but another thing to consider is velocity. I like to have an airgun at or below 1000 fps to eliminate the sonic "crack" that tends to happen when you shoot a faster gun. Also, i know that when using a .22 LR round that goes supersonic, the accuracy suffers when it drops back below supersonic speeds. So i say get a gamo in 22 caliber that shoots about 1000 fps with the whisper noise reduction, then you will be as quiet as you can be, and still have the killing power.

For a rifle, the Daisy Avanti 753S is a single stroke pneumatic. Nice and quiet and very accurate. Sells for $250.00 at P/A. Not a powerhouse but plenty for a small pest. Mine averages 470fps with a 7.4gr pellet.

For a pistol, the Cometa Indian is a springer, easy to cock, quiet, and plenty accurate. Sell for $190.00 at P/A.
Mine averages 475fps with a 7.4gr pellet.

Either of these would serve your purpose well.

For the occasional back yard pest shoots I use a Sheridan blue streak open sight 5mm or a Hatsan 85 .22 cal with a Hawke 2x7x32 ao

Maybe some of them are quiet, but there are certainly quality break barrels out there that are loud. Years ago I was shooting a tuned Weihrauch .20 cal break barrel in an acquaintance's back yard and it was loud enough that someone several yards down asked me if it was a .22LR rifle.

I think it's relative. My pump and springers are quiet when compared to my regular PCP's. The disco is almost like shooting a .22lr, noise wise.

The moderated PCP's are quiet vs the pump and spring powered units until you get them beside a suppressed .22 firing subsonic ammo.
