I am writing a short college paper. Can anyone cite a statistic with a source for "how much money do americans spend on the gun industry every year". Even some that do not directly apply would be helpful. All i can find is specifics, say Ruger's profits up and such and such. What about all the gun manufatures as a whole? Thanks

all I can say is that the average retail margins I have seen vary from 10% to 35% on firearms.

not really a complete answer to your question, but I already wrote my share of papers ;)

Ruger and S&W are publicly traded so info about their annual profit/losses is available. Most of the firearms manufacturers are privately owned so that info is not available. Many of the big manufacturers are losing money or barely profitable. When Cerberus bought Remington they assumed $252 million in Remington debt.

Contact the National Shooting Sports Foundation http://www.nssf.org. They have lots of industry data.

Added: They will be pretty busy this week and next with SHOT Show. I have their report on firearms sales for 2007 (PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you), but it does not include other related items (accessories and hunting gear). I'm sure they have another report that does.

It's difficult to report a true overall number because most firearm manufacturers are not publically-traded companies, so they keep that data private.

There is some public data available that could help you. For instance, most states' game departments report revenue generated from the sale of hunting licenses. Also, the amount generated by the Pittman-Robertson excise tax on firearms and ammunition is another potential barometer, though remember that it does include taxes on archery equipment.

As the others have said you're just looking at basic problems with public vs. private companies here. Another avenue to look at is the ATF reports that each manufacturer has to file every year stating how many guns they manufactured. You could use that to look at historical production numbers.
